Hello Mike and Marc,

Thought your readers and listeners might like to know something about Ginger Halfpenny, being one of those larger than life characters that sport sometimes produces.

 

Born in Bulawayo in 1936 Edward Ginger Halfpenny played first pairing with Tinker Beets for Matabeleland in Provincial golf matches. He twice won the Wankie Open championship, beating the professional George Harvey on one occasion. He was captain of the Chapman golf club in 1968. Ginger owned the “Golf World” shop in Newlands, Harare, for 44 years. The shop was a well known golf focal point for golfers before he sold it in 2010 to become consultant greenkeeper at Country Club, Harare.

However he was perhaps better known in his early days as a top jockey and subsequently a premier racehorse trainer, especially for his importation of young horses and creating winners from many of them. As an apprentice he rode at Belvedere before racing was established at Borrowdale. He won the first Rhodesian Derby in 1963. He also rode with success in Zambia and in the Congo. He was later a stipendiary steward at the Mashonaland Turf Club.

Some 18 months ago he went to England “to see what is what.” He died there at the age of 79.

Death Notice: Ginger Halfpenny (Edward Thomas Halfpenny).  It is with great sadness that the Halfpenny announce the death on 11 July in the UK, of their beloved father, Ginger, father of Gary (SA), Deane (UK), Simone (UK), Robyn (SA), Leanne (Zimbabwe) and Liam (SA) and grandchildren.  Ginger was a revered member of the horse racing and golfing community, his knowledge and dedication to both sports will be sorely missed.  Rest in peace, our dear Ginger.  Memorial service date will be announced shortly.

Death Notice:  Helmut Ruhe (12.12.34 - 14.7.15) ex Barlows/Zemco passed away at home suddenly on Tuesday 14th July.  Husband to Michaeleen, adoring father to Katinka and "Daddad" to Olivia and Henry.  Michaeleen and Katinka would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support and friendship during this time.  No Funeral Service will be held.

City of Harare replaced two stop signs yesterday at the Steppes Rd/Kew Drive intersection with Ridgeway North – and the cops were there at lunch time. Might be an idea to warn motorists using that route????

Motorists beware the Kew Drive-Ridgeway North junction. The police have reerected the STOP sign so they can catch drivers as they turn left into Ridgeway North. We rang various numbers but got no satisfaction. We were told to go to Highlands Police Station or perhaps the police have to remove it as it is regularly vandalised. Ken

Dear Mike  Being sensitized to the recent events concerning the baby elephants and other violations of our wildlife, please can I bring it to your attention, what happened yesterday and how National Parks are failing us badly.  A small pride of lions wondered into the area of Great Zimbabwe and instead of relocating them, they called in a Professional hunter(personally known to me) to shoot them all. This shows their total lack of compassion and conservation policies.  seems like apathy and greed has got to them too. At this rate, we are not going to have any wildlife left for the future generations and National parks just cant be bothered to do things correctly.  am appalled at what is happening to our precious wildlife(and these are only the things we get to hear about)

... and for those of you who would like a fitness workout with HEAPS of adrenaline... there is paintball (under new ownership) at One67 Enterprise on a Friday afternoon and all day Saturday and Sunday (and Wednesday and Thursday by bookings). Come and work up a sweat at our paintball field! ...and finish off with a delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch at the on-site coffee shop!  or... surprisingly good upper-body strength needed (and workout supplied for free!) at the go karts at Country Club in Newlands on Saturday and Sunday afternoons - possibly followed by a burger at the club house ;)  Exercise does not have to be lonely or boring!

My biggest question after reading all these comments is literally " what can I do about it all?" Not ment as a exclamation of dispair but as a genuine question. Anyone out there? What can a civilian do to protest against the abuse of our natural heritage? Lots of comments but very little in the way of solutions. I love to be proactive but is money the only way anything will get done? Sirbrowndsound

living in Christon Bank and driving out on the Mazowe Road each day, I am appalled at the rubbish that of late is dumped on the road verges. It seems that there is no jurisdiction in place for people to simply stop and drop their sackfuls of rubbish. As is that isn't unsightly enough, the bags are torn open by dogs and the litter strewn everywhere. It is particularly bad on the stretch by the Polo grounds, before the toll. Is there nothing that can be done about this illegal dumping? Who can we appeal to to try to stop this antisocial behaviour and bring the offenders to book? I would desperately like to bring this to the attention of the law, but am not sure where to start. Do any of your readers have suggestions?  Thank you,  Concerned Green Citizen

I am also heartbroken at the picture of the destroyed vendors' property in the bypass tunnel. So much institutionalised suffering and hunger. Also the picture of a thin vendor being manhandled by a prosperous looking policeman….. How does a beautiful Nation such as ours, with wonderful caring people, change the dynamic of impunity and insensitivity to the suffering of humans and animals……. We should also circulate the good examples of the extra mile, the road less travelled. The age old adage "one good deed deserves another". We can all spread joy one person at a time. I was in the most horrendous traffic jam in Workington from the stupid closure of Coventry Road. Absolute grid lock. One hour to move 200m along Paisley Road. One person got off the back of a moribund truck and slowly relieved the pressure, one stuck vehicle at a time. One unsung hero who made a difference. Also smiles and good cheer in a bad situation are gifts. Just smiling when I was stuck and being friendly to those around me lifted the spirit.

Let's spread the joy share how good it feels to be part of the human race. I had a fight at the Bridge Spar on Sunday morning with a fat guy in a fancy car parked in a handicapped bay. In front of his child he used all the racist hate speech he could muster. Photos social media shame. One battle at a time. My mantra in middle age is spread the joy. Let us take a very close look at the statistic of 15,000 Elephant strong in Sebungwe in 2006 – we all know that  There are less than 3400 Elephant left to-date in this area – a statistic taken before an extraordinary meeting between the Chiefdom of the area, Parks, Government etc. in May 2015. Of course there are those who are trying to make an indent into this current demise, but we have to face the facts that
Currently, regrettably, there is no real credible commitment and Zimbabwe is definitely on a “road of no return”.   We are, however, fortunate that with technology, we have witnesses. Leadership in Africa is still considered a privilege.  Cultures both in Asia and Africa flourish in an Opportunist and Corrupt environment and the devastation being meted out to people and our Wildlife in Zimbabwe has been relentless.   The collaboration is both dangerous internationally and lucrative considering the extraordinary amount of cash which is exchanged in this trade. Licensed Hunters who pay top Dollar - Locally - in cash - for their Trophies are well-received as part of this collaboration.

The witnessing of deals within our apparent “Breeding Programmes” too in which those involved, purport to safeguard our Majestic Lions – These programmes which do relocate a percentage of the Lion population on the African Continent are a mere ruse for backdoor deals both locally and internationally of our beautiful wildlife who are being Traumatised through separation, containerised, exported “legally” and rarely are unaffected by these brutal experiences.
Over-populated holding pens of high numbers of Male Lions are clearly evident – Females Lions birth their cubs which are separated from their mothers at 3 weeks old.  These are the facts.  These programmes are not sustainable without The endorsement by Government itself.     What is obvious is the mythological story of Pandora’s Box, which, thanks to new technology, may have only just been “opened” and those who are party to this collaboration will not continue to flourish along with their Local and International Hunters/Asian Dealers who benefit from the spoils of poaching or licensed hunting.  The future generations of Africa have a right to preserve their Wildlife and Land but it must be made clear that the Above statistics are a clear indication that the “Hope” which may be found at the bottom of Pandora’s Box may just Be too late.

DEPOSIT FINES

 

The Schedule of Deposit Fines issued by the Z.R.P. in August 2013 remains the only version - there are no subsequent versions. (The deposit fines listed in our Cubbyhole Notes no. 10 January, 2015, remain applicable).

 

The maximum deposit fine a police officer can legally impose is $20.00 per offence. (A Level 3 fine). A fine higher than level 3 can only be imposed by a magistrate after a court appearance. If a motorist is unsure about the fine being imposed, the police officer should advise whether the fine is a Level 1, 2 or 3.

 

Deposit fines are imposed per offence, and if found with more than one ‘issue’, the police officer can ‘add them up’.

 

The ZRP member will complete an Admission of Guilt form (Z.R.P. N.TFC). Motorists can request that the Charge Field (Section and Statutory enactment), which details the regulations being contravened, be completed fully and legibly. A copy of a properly completed Admission of Guilt form is essential for any motorist who wishes to query the fine being paid.

 

VEHICLE LIVERY

 

Trailers (including horse-trailers):

 

1.         All trailers to have a white T (extreme right, front) and red T(extreme right, rear).

2.         A light trailer (load capacity which does not exceed 550kg) to display red, 50 mm honeycomb type reflective tape at the rear of the vehicle, horizontally to within 400 mm of each side of the trailer.

3.         ‘Heavy’ trailers (load capacity exceeding 550kg) must be fitted with a rear warning sign (a red/yellow chevron plate) and GVM/NVM information.

4.         A light trailer is not required to be braked.

 

Deposit fines:

-           No rear number plate light     $20.00

-           No white front reflective “T” (except construction trailers) $10.00

-           No red rear reflective “T” (except construction trailers)      $10.00

-           No continuous red rear reflectors (light trailer)        $10.00

-           No chevron on the rear (heavy trailer)          $10.00

-           Fail to display gross & net mass on left side of the vehicle(trailer) $10.00

 

Note: A light trailer has a load capacity which does not exceed 550 kg. However, the “Schedule of Deposit Fines” states that trailers with a factory rated load capacity of 545 kgs or more are classified as “HEAVY”. A load capacity not exceeding 550 kg is the correct description of a light trailer.

 

Reflectors on the sides of vehicles are required when a vehicle or a vehicle towing a trailer has an overall length exceeding 8 metres: Amber, 50mm honeycomb type reflective tape, horizontally to within 400mm of the outer edges of the vehicle (front and back).

 

Light motor vehicles must have two white reflectors at the front, and two red reflectors at the rear, within 400mm of the sides. Must be “honeycomb” type. The minimum size for reflectors is, if circular, at least 60mm in diameter. A triangular or rectangular shape must have a minimum area of 3,000mm2. As the tape is 50mm wide a piece of tape 50 X 60mm gives an area of 3,000mm2.

 

Deposit fines:

-           No red rear reflectors $20.00

-           No white front reflectors        $20.00

 

Heavy duty vehicles/Commercial vehicles: 

 

1.         Must have two white reflectors at the front. Minimum size per Light Motor Vehicles.

2.         To display red, 50mm honeycomb type reflective tape at the rear of the vehicle, horizontally to within 400mm of each side of the vehicle.

3.         GVM/NVM information to be displayed on the left of commercial vehicles (see registration book for details).

 

Deposit fines:

-           No white front reflectors        $20.00

-           No continuous rear red reflective “warning sign”     $15.00

-           Fail to display gross & net mass on the left side of the vehicle       $10.00

 

Note: 

1.         “Commercial vehicles” include vanettes, pick-ups and double-cabs, not exceeding 2 300kg NVM. SUV’s (station-wagons) are not classified as commercial vehicles.

2.         The requirements under “commercial vehicles” apply whether or not the vehicle is in private use.

Dagaboys news GARY CHARSLEY

I received an email from Carol dated the 16^th advising me that Gary had suffered a heart attack on Sunday the 12^th.

Carol writes – “Just to let you know that Gary had a heart attack very early on Sunday morning, and was taken by ambulance to the main hospital in Douglas, where he was secured and treated. We were advised that he would be transported to Liverpool’s Broad Green hospital, by air ambulance, for an angiogram and a stent, and the transport happened on Tuesday morning. However, when the angiogram was done on Wednesday, the consultant chose not to put a stent in, as the heart needs a triple by-pass. Due to the demand for beds the operation  may only happen in a week’s time possible two!

This is obviously a very worrying time for both Carol and Gary and their family - they need our support in the form of prayer and letters of encouragement, it may be a fairly routine op but nevertheless our support is a must.

Although Carol is in Douglas (Isle of Man) until the op is scheduled and Gary in Liverpool rest assured every message will reach Gary with a minimum of delay – the email address is  garycharsley@btinternet.com

Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
