POISONED ELEPHANTS

UPDATE ON 3 POISONED ELEPHANTS LAST WEEK OF SEPT 2015

Further to the below update sent 21/9 on the suspected poisoning of 2 Elephants weekend of the 20th Sept.

The samples taken from the first 2 Elephants for analysis were sent through to AWARE Trust Veterinarians and MAPP, who were traveling to Harare, kindly took them through.

AWARE trust collected the samples and they were taken to the University of Zimbabwe for testing.

The testing was confirmed positive for cyanide on both Elephants.

The orange removed with stomach content from the 1st Elephant found at the dumps also tested positive for cyanide.

Parks and Wildlife have the relative information and a copy of the Analysis of the tissue samples from UZ.

The following Sunday 27/9 Parks & KAWFT received a report of a 3rd Ele down near the dump site.

This boy had been dead a few days already. No samples were taken from him due to the length of time the Elephant had been dead as the carcass had swollen to double the size due to the heat.

The relative Law Authorities have picked up a number of people for questioning regarding the finding of cyanide and are working hard to establish who was involved in these savage and despicable killings. We will advise updates as the Law Authorities continue and complete their investigation.

Many thanks to  Aware trust for assisting with the urgency of these samples and for covering the testing costs, MAPP for their great assistance and work as well as Bumi who assisted with the Authorities on a search.

ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 2015

ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 2015

The hot weather is upon us and it’s the time to open all doors and windows and this is when we need to make sure a good security plan is in place.  Do not let your guard down and leave the grills and locks off as this is only inviting perpetrators to gladly come into your premises. With the incessant long power cuts we are experiencing it is so easy to forget as a through breeze is always so welcome in this heat! .. Be wise, where possible make another plan to generate power, keep alarms on and all remotes charged for a safe existence! There have been reports of gate bells being rung even in the broad daylight with sob stories of sick relatives, and bosses away or wallets left behind and needing assistance with the promise of returning to repay the loan … this is a SCAM … its hard as we all have a compassionate side to our makeup and we like to believe its genuine …. PLEASE use your own discretion .  There is a large unemployment rate in this country and most citizens are finding it tough financially so to be conned is frustrating.

With the horrendous power cuts many of the traffic lights are not working and may not have enough energy to recharge leaving chaos in its wake … It is hoped that the City hierarchy with ZESA have had the foresight to communicate with the ZRP Traffic Control to have these areas manned at peak hours but at other times too ….as the rules of the road are not being adhered to and there is a load of road rage causing unnecessary accidents and delays.  Our already congested roads do not need this unnecessary happening. Many drivers need to read through the rules again and adhere to them ! … Calm the road rage and the abominable driving where whatever you want to do seem fair game ….. Lets see an improvement as this will be a start !.

Let’s ALL fight this crime together  - stay ALERT and SAFE  !

ZESA

I find constant complaints about the lack of Zesa quite annoying, considering that there have been warnings, press statements, emails flying around, stories about Kariba power supply etc. etc. etc.  We KNEW this would happen, why does everyone keep going on about it.  No amount of whinging is going to stop what is happening.  I believe we just have to be ready for cuts at any time - batteries kept charged, generator fuel in stock, candle supply topped up.  It’s going to be a long, tough ride !

……………..

I phoned our Zesa Foreman at the depot in our area and shared the exciting news that there was now a schedule so when would it be enforced.  This was his reply………..”MADAM THERE IS NO POWER TO PUT ON A SCHEDULE NO ONE IS ADHERING TO THE SCHEDULE AS THE CAPACITY OF THE POWER DOES NOT EXIST”  In a nutshell it isn’t going to HAPPEN.  Many promises but no fulfilment.   Kind regards  Jenny Swift

……………..

I have read through the lake report each time its sent out. From what i can make out the lake (kariba) will hit its minimum generating capacity ( if rains do not fall) sometime towards the end of the year. I interpret this as meaning that kariba has not yet reached its minimum generating capacity, which I then surmise means we should still be getting a regular power supply? I stand to be corrected in this. Alternatively, If kariba has 'throttled back' the generating capacity, has zambia also done this or is Zimbabwe taking all the flak? Also, I'm sure many have also thought of the following ideas but what of building secondary and perhaps tertiary walls a bit further downstream? Not as big but but they would allow the same water to be used more than once to generate power. Some countries actually pump the water used to generate power back uphill to replenish the reservoir. I'm aware that all ideas could have knock on effect but  Surely governments answers to this crisis cannot be to ban high power appliances? That is simply ludicrous. I would love to hear more knowledgeable peoples views on these topics.  Sirbrowndsound

……………

I live in Chadcombe, Msasa Park area and the past two weeks funny as this may sound Zesa has stuck to that schedule, but now this week it’s not…which means the staff at Coventry road are on rotation and this week we have the “nasty” couldn’t give a damn staff on duty.  This is what I have noticed and paid particular attention too. Regards Amelia

……………..

Whilst fully understanding the requirement for load shedding, it appears certain areas get preferential treatment .i.e. only 4-6 hours off per day, or in many cases no load shedding at all. Too many VIP circuits. Spread the load a bit!!

…………….

My sister in law contacted ZESA yesterday to complain  - only to be told that  the load shedding schedule was a guide  - no guarantee of power.  Frustrating,  inconvenient but sadly a reality. The future in the short term is bleak; you have little choice other than to make the best plan you can obviously dependent on your circumstances, this forum is best served  I think, by hearing from those readers that have  “made a plan” its cold comfort knowing we are all in the same boat, but  interested / helpful to know what individuals have done. I have installed a solar pool pump. Peter

…………….

I live @ 21 Victoria Drive, Newlands and ZESA are not abiding by this load-shedding schedule e.g. yesterday (Monday) went in the morning ±5:30am only to return last night at ±10:00pm.

Gone this morning (Tuesday) ‘again’…..±5:30am  They are “nuts”!!

……………..

Many thanks for sending this out, but I feel a serious discussion ought to be started about this.

For a start, this is a complete farce. ZESA have no intention of sticking to this or any schedule, so why do they even insult us by drafting and publishing it? Instead this is compete incompetency and obliviousness masquerading as planning and efficiency when we know all too well that no one is remotely interested in overseeing the fair distribution of these power cuts.

Sure, there is an electricity deficit. The fact that our government has done nothing whatsoever to provide for the inevitable surge in demand for power over the last 35 years aside, at least dealing with the problem in a fair and equitable way now so that all citizens share in the problem should be the least they can do. Instead, as we all know, and despite any schedule they will produce, some areas of Harare are cut ceaselessly all day and all night every day while others inexplicably never seem to see load shedding at all.

Why should some of us bear this burden so brutally while others are spared even the smallest inconvenience?

I am listed for the Ballantyne Park area. We have cuts virtually every day of the week, from around 6:30 am to well after 10:30 pm most of the time. Sunday, for example, the power was out at 06:52 am and came back at 23:30 pm. According to the schedule we were only meant to be cut from 05:00 am to 13:00. Yesterday, the power was out at 05:33 am and according to the schedule was meant to return at 13:00. In fact it came back at 21:30. Today we are not scheduled to have a cut in the morning, but already, as I write, the power is out.

In contrast, I know for a fact that large parts of Alex Park, the Avenues, Avondale, Glen Lorne and some other areas, which, according to the schedule are meant to have cuts equally with other affected areas, are hardly ever cut. In fact, I know from a friend of mine in Alex Park who has not suffered a cut in over three months and even then, for a mere three hours!

How can this possibly be fair? Why is ZESA not urgently addressing this problem and making sure that all areas can be cut equally so that we can all share this problem fairly? Hospitals and state installations should be put onto direct lines or bypassed from suburbs.

The cost to a business or family who need to source virtually all their own power all day every day is simply an unjust tax on ZESA’s inability to come up with a fair distribution model during this crisis.

Thanks,

Neal Hovelmeier

Kariba Lake Levels

I have been doing some research.

If one looks at the Kariba lake level graphs published on the Zambesi River Authority website http://www.zaraho.org.zm/hydrology/lake-levels  and projecting the graph for the period up to early January 2016, using last year’s graph, for the remainder of this year, the level will drop to just over 477.0M.  This is about 0.75M higher than where it was in January 1996, the previous low, and still leaves 1.5M of generating capacity before hitting the  475.5M level, or 6 weeks of generation at current output.

The slope of the lake level graph from end of June to mid September does not suggest there has been any reduction in water take-off.  However, the next lake level update may show a slowing down of the drop.

Interestingly, the Nehanda Radio website http://nehandaradio.com/2015/08/27/water-rationing-limits-kariba-power-generation/ quoted Zimbabwe Power Corporation in August saying that the water generation capacity available until the end of the year had to be reduced from 45 to 40 billion cubic M.  This must be shared equally between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and when translated to actual power, the website quoted that 475Mw would be available to Zimbabwe and only 305Mw to Zambia….presumably each using the same water!!  Which begs the questions, Why?  Are the newer turbines on the Zambian side less efficient?

KARIBA - THROWING OF THUNDER FLASHES AT ELEPHANTS

KARIBA - THROWING OF THUNDER FLASHES AT ELEPHANTS

INCIDENT FRIDAY 2 OCT 2015 – HEIGHTS KARIBA – THROWING OF THUNDER FLASHES AT ELEPHANTS

Reports of Thunder Flashes being thrown at Elephants at the Heights

KAWFT passed on a report to The Area Manager Parks and Parks Authorities will be visiting the persons involved in this as this is consistently being done.

In a recent instance the Elephant was in someone else’s property yet this same perpetrator still threw a Thunder Flash at the Elephant.

The elephant panicked and ran straight through the locked gate so he could get back on to the road and get away.

This could have been a terrible incident had there been someone walking on the road or had the elephant decided to turn around and take his fury out on the property owner’s vehicles which were parked just behind the Elephant.

Some innocent person is going to get hurt or another innocent Elephant ends up being put down due to no forethought of what can unravel in an incident like this, as what happened with the large well known Bull Elephant last month on 26/9 in the Chawara area that fell through a septic tank and broke his leg after having thunder flash thrown AT him.

Of importance, please also note that there is the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and that persons carrying out this sort of behaviour can be prosecuted by the relative Authorities

ELEPHANTS RAIDING YARD ON BAOBAB RIDGE

A slightly more lighted hearted raid by Elephants.  KAWFT received a frantic call from a Baoboab resident early in the morning last week.

Their gate had been left open for a short while and 2 Elephants walking past, wondered up the driveway to explore all the lush green mango trees etc. – much more inviting than the dry areas outside of the yard !!

In 10 minutes the mango trees and anything else they could chomp up was gone.  The owners managed to chase them out with safety in mind of both themselves and the Elephants – without throwing Thunder flashes/crackers at them !

We did warn them that the Eles would be back to visit !!!, as there is much truth that they have an excellent memory.

They did come back, to find the sliding steel gate was closed and locked. They proceeded to pop the lock off the gate and then try and push it open.

These Eles have not yet learnt the trick of a sliding gate but would not be surprised if they soon do...

The gate was slightly damaged in that it now could not open but was soon repaired.

We suggested they place shade cloth the length and height of the gate and a bit either side.

Most Elephants shy away from shade cloth as they cannot see through it and the shade cloth also changes the view of the break-in area to the Elephant compared to how he remembers it.

As we are in the dry season, wildlife will be searching for fresh food -

Please

Do not leave food stuffs in vehicles

Keep in secure places that Elephants or Baboons cannot break into !!

Those who are fortunate to have electric fences, make sure they are working properly and do not leave your gates open.

ANOTHER NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Still waiting for Mr & Mrs Mica to have a new foal after losing 2 in as many years.

But in the meantime this small herd was inside NATUREWAYS CANOEING SAFARIS site, with their brand spanking new addition to the herd.

Hope that that he survives a few years without getting hit by a speeding vehicle !!

Please remember to pay attention on the roads and slow down when you see

ELE WITH ABCESS SWELLING ON GROIN GENITAL AREA 6 OCT 2015

We have received numerous reports from Residents concerning this very sore looking elephant

Photos have been forwarded to Parks Area Manager & Aware Vets in Harare and as soon as we have their diagnosis, if treatment is required, we will advise and seek permission from Parks for Vets to dart and administer meds.

In the meantime if anyone has sighting of this Ele, please let us know urgently so we can keep track of his whereabouts.

On Tuesday they were Lomagundi Lakeside and then by the ponds across from the Driving school practice area, opposite Nyamhunga.
