EARLY DAYS AT HWANGE

EARLY DAYS AT HWANGE: Ted Davison, as most know, was the first warden of the newly proclaimed "Wankie Game Reserve", in 1928 and he served as the first warden for 33 years. In the foreward to Ted’s marvelous book "WANKIE: The Story of a Great Game Reserve", he is described by Prime Minister Ian Smith as the person who "probably did more than anyone else in Rhodesia for the preservation and development of our wild game and the promotion of Wankie as one of the great tourist attractions of this world".

Connie Davison, Ted’s wife has written some pages towards a book she hoped would be published but her writings were never published. Her son John in Pinetown, RSA, has a file of her typed pages and transcribes these for the WEZ newsletter from time to time. The first two episodes, "Pet’s and "Camp Followers" were sent earlier as attachments to the newsletter, but can be resent on request.

(Note** The following paragraph was written by John Davison to accompany these episodes)

Although rightly so, Ted Davison's many years in Wankie stand as a fitting memorial to his single minded determination and love of the bush (along with a huge measure of tolerance from Connie his lifelong wife and companion), but it needs also to be recalled that after he left Main Camp he led the team of dedicated wildlife professionals and its first convoy of lorries down to and back from Imfulosi in KwaZulu Natal upon which eight White Rhino were translocated in the then longest road translocation ever of these wonderfull creatures back to Zimbabwe, four to Kyle and four to Matopas (Matobo). The species had been regionally extinct in Zimbabwe for over 90 years yet it is depicted on many widespread San ( Bushmen) rock paintings as well as being documented in hunters writings as being quite plentiful - even along the Dett Vlie where the Hwange Safari Lodge now stands. For Rhino of either species to once again become regionally extinct in Zimbabwe would be unthinkable and a huge indictment on conservationists the world over -John Davison.)

Does everything have to be so complicated!

Number Plates.
This applies to your own privately owned car only.
Go to Causeway Post Office, counter No. 15 or 16. ask for a form to change
Number Plates. This is the same form as used to cross the border to SA. Its free. Ask if they have the correct shape plates for your vehicle.

Then fill in the form as if you are going to SA. And take it to Southerton
for clearance, When they take the details for entry into their book tell
them its for number plates only. Take the log book with you and your I.D.

After this is completed take the number plates off your car and go back to
Causeway Post Office, to the same counter. Take the log book, a copy of your I.D. or drivers licence and the original the number plates and $360-00 to pay.

Ask at your first visit to the counter at Causeway, what you need to bring
with the number plates, in case I've forgotten or anything has changed.

The first visit takes about 2 minutes unless you have a big queue, and the
second about 5 or 6 minutes again depending on the queue.

I found it best to go to Souderton after lunch, they start work at 2-00 pm
"Central African Police Time". It took me about an hour in total, with 7
cars in front of me in the queue. They keep everyone outside until they are
ready to start. I suggest you don't go just before a school holiday

A poem by James Sturges (84)

Jacarandas, blue tinged trees,
Laughing children, all say please.
Smiling nannies loud and chatting,
Queens Club cricket, Rhodies batting.
Braais and picnics, Maleme Dam,
Tanganda tea and Colcom Ham.
Greeting friends to talk and talk,
Hillside Dams were safe to walk.
Snakes and mossies, flying ants,
Schoolboy rugby, winning chants.
Swimming parties,sleep-in nights,
Christmas Carols by candle light.
Honest Police, able and willing,
Downing's rolls ten for a shilling.
Sunday car trips, Matopos caves,
OM's and Busters Saturday raves.
Week-end outings to Vic Falls,
Dancing and Ballet in Curtain Calls.
Beautiful gardens, Centenary Park,
Window shopping just after dark.
Burger and Hot-dogs, Eskimo Ices,
Aromas from cafes of curry and spices.
Snow white tackies, Bata shoes,
Charity fetes, tombola and booze.
Clear blue skies or heavy rain,
Wish I could live it all over again.
Memories fade, so much to tell.
Oh Yes, Dear Rhodesia
I remember you well.

FEBRUARY 2010

P O Box HG 641 Highlands Harare Zimbabwe

The Chairman and Editorial Team:
CHAIRMAN: Tim Thorburn 498723 / 0912.645.518 So what happened at the dung beetle Turnout was lower than usual due to a number of regulars being called away. 4 contenders from Harare did make it namely, Peter Benzon (LR); Baz Downey (LR); Ray Walker (Daihatsu); Mass Kirk & Mark Benzon (Cournil Courna-Korna). This left 4 locals and 4 visitors on the day after Panyoti's jeep blew the motor Friday night. The courses were challenging and fun, gradually getting tougher which gave us a chance to ease into it. Thanks to Michael Maas who was responsible for the courses this year. Weather was great, overcast and cool but moist for some ideal traction. The four morning courses went well with two cars limping in to lunch break with ailments. Roger Barry’s Jeep broke a front diff; we managed to change the axle. Peter Doprops broke a half shaft but all was repaired for the extreme courses. One particular cross axle climb caught many of us napping, V8s included, having to give it a number of attempts and then ending up in a tree. Hot Contenders from Mutare were Michael Maas (V8 jeep); Peter Doprop (V8 Landy); Costa Doprop (V8 Jeep) and Roger Barry (V6 Jeep). Needless to say we had a fight on our hands to drill that lot with Courna-Korna. We won the special class but Michael beat us overall. Now to the extreme! It was an epic Battle!!The two courses were set in the river gully at the Quarry (wet and steep) lucky us we were first in and just before the big climb we were churning mud in the river failing to pull ourselves out, we gave it a couple of different approaches and eventually slipped in against the bank and the tree, I could see the crowd had given up on us and were looking around for a vehicle to extricate us from our dilemma. However!! Courna-Korna is multi maneuverable and as the crowd looked in disbelief we locked it in full crab steer and popped ourselves out of that hole which got us out the river and we completed the course. In the final extreme which was a unique, partly man made course with a bridge that doubled back on itself round in circles several times. It was down to the wire between Roger and Peter Doprop. Both drove brilliantly and it was a tie! They were given the option of a tie breaker, re-run the section in reverse direction or leave it a tie. They decided to go for it and it was Peter first all cool till the final exit, just too steep. The V8 bellowed, dirt flew and the rear diff went bang; game over. The Jeep got through to the exit and bogged in Peter’s holes. In a last ditch all or nothing run the Jeep bounced and bucked out the channel and leapt up onto the exit anthill and stopped - no drive on the front wheels. Only the nose was through the exit gate! Roger called for human assist which would have clinched a win, but as hard as we tried we could not push it up the hill and so the result remained a draw. The atmosphere was unbeatable, guys were fired up with all the action, this is what I love about 4x4 competition.
Well done to the competitors. Yours in mud and dust! Till next time Mass Kirk

Notification of roberry in Chinhoyi

Good morning, I would like to warn people who intend to book in at the Orange Grove Hotel. My family and I were invited to a 60th Birthday Party and booked in at the hotel on Saturday. We were robbed during the early hours of the morning. All our cash was stolen, my cellphone, my husband’s leather jacket and 9 of my rings, which included my wedding ring, eternity ring and engagement ring. When the police came they advised us that almost every week there have been thefts reported. Our rooms were locked and the windows were closed, however when we got up in the morning, the windows were opened, how did they manage to break in without the windows being broken ? If there are constant robberies, should customers not be warned so that they can be extra careful.

I just wanted to advise that if anyone in the Chinhoyi area is approached by people trying to sell rings or a cellphone Nokia 5000 and a leather jacket (Men’s black), please contact Craig Joseph, my husband on 091 2 305 760. The rings include a dress ring with a centre sapphire stone surrounded by small cubic sirconiar, one ring has an emerald and a cubic sirconiar, the other ring is a signet ring in the shape of a heart with initials s on the top and c on the bottom. The other one has a light green stone (not sure what stone it is, it was a gift),
