ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR MARCH 2011

ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR MARCH 2011

March has been busy with a lot of reports coming in on suspicious vehicles cruising around shopping centres and people being followed from different areas and in most of the cases this has been a silver Golf (Imported not local) with no number plates. Please all be on your guard, and take notice of what is going on around you. Be vigilant and if you suspect you are being followed do NOT stop or go into your driveway, keep moving to the nearest Police Station or a busy well lit area for help. Try not to stop on the side of the road to chat or exchange parcels or such like, as you then become a PRIME target. This vehicle has tried to cutoff and make the driver pull over pointing at the tyres with the HAZARD lights flashing …. Fortunately a warning had previously gone out and the driver took heed and kept on going to find that nothing was wrong with the tyres … you need to have the presence of mind to realize it’s a scam. This vehicle has been reported to the Police and hopefully will be caught and the perpetrators brought to book. This vehicle has been spotted for quite some time now, so be aware.

House robberies are ongoing, and entry is being gained by removing wall panels or jumping over the wall into the yard and then robbing the home or demanding money. In some cases the alarm system had not been activated and therefore had not triggered off a response and the perpetrators then have’ free range’ and time to pick and choose goods wanted. Gate motors and swimming pool pumps are still high on the agenda. Do not leave anything lying around or out in the open, that is an open invitation. Neighbourhood Watch is a great deterrent and they can only operate correctly if they have the support of the residents in the area - we all want to have our families safe and secure. Remember it takes effort on all sides.

City of Harare are trying to get the street lights working in as many areas as possible, but this takes time. Be very careful when driving at night, or in a storm, of the pot holes in the road. There are many and these cause severe damage to your tyres and vehicle - reduce speed and keep to the rules of the road, the use of mobile phones is illegal whilst driving if you do not have the hands-free equipment in your vehicle. The standard of driving is deteriorating rapidly – lets curb the road rage and bad habits and make Zimbabwe safe for all.

Let’s ALL fight this crime together - stay ALERT and SAFE !

Mass Graves Raise More Questions Than Answers

23 March 2011

The manner in which mass graves are being 'discovered' and bodies exhumed from various disused mines in the country is raising more questions than it is providing answers, various commentators have said.

The Fallen Hero's Trust, an obscure group aligned to ZANU PF, claims to have discovered 19 mass graves in the Mount Darwin district, with the remains of what it says are thousands of people massacred by the white minority regime before independence and thrown into the Monkey William Mine in Bembera village.

Just like the anti-sanctions petition ZANU PF have carefully coordinated the exhumations, giving them prime time viewing on national television. The plan is said to involve whipping up emotions against the West for past atrocities committed by the Rhodesian regime and tie this in with the West's targeted sanctions against members of the Mugabe regime.

But questions have begun to emerge that raise doubts about whether the bodies being exhumed are those of people killed before independence, or after. In the eighties Mugabe's crack 5th brigade troops massacred close to 20 000 people in the Matabeleland and Midlands provinces, while thousands of MDC supporters have been killed in the nearly 12 years the party has been in existence.

When diamonds where discovered in the Chiadzwa fields of the Marange district, the army quickly moved and began slaughtering hundreds of illegal panners, using helicopter gunships. Reports began to emerge of ZANU PF attempts to bury the bodies but council after council refused to give permission for any mass burials. Its speculated the bodies were eventually quietly disposed of.

Some of the bodies being exhumed and shown on television still had hair and clothes intact and dripping body fluids. Questions are being raised about how can they be people killed 32 years ago. The manner of the exhumations has also been criticized for having no proper pathology or DNA testing to determine the identity of the bodies. The bodies are just being placed in a heap on the site with no proper handling.

Shockingly the NewsDay newspaper reports that schoolchildren, teachers and villagers were last Friday "forced to go underground and view the bodies so that they would appreciate the extent of the brutalities of the Rhodesian army."

This 'propaganda at all costs mentality' has been highly criticized as nothing more than child abuse. Children should never be subjected to the horrific viewing of dead bodies

IN MEMORIUM ROBERTS - Madeleine Ann (Mandy)

In loving and eternal memory of our much loved Mum, mum-in-law, Gran, sister, aunt and friend, who passed away peacefully on the 19th March 2008 after an illness borne with courage and dignity.

Three long years have passed, my mum since you left us. You are in my thoughts each and every day of my life. I miss you so much and treasure the memories I have of you. You left a legacy for me. One of inspiration, courage and a never failing ability to laugh. Your indomitable spirit remains my greatest ambition.

I see you in the beauty of a bright blue sky

I feel you near when my tears I cry

I see you in the stars that shine at night

You are the breeze that helps me to fly

I believe in Angels and the triumph of good

I believe in integrity, courage and love

I believe that love any distance transcends

I will always believe you look down from above

I still cry my tears my much loved mum

And time does not mean that my heart has mended

But I will celebrate your unique and bravely live life

And try hard to accept that your time here ended

When your soul left this plane, everything changed

But there are some things that will remain the same

The love of my mum, nothing can take

You walked this earth and your legacy remains.

We will always love you and miss you beyond any words.

Your daughter, Caroline, son-in-law Craig and your grandchildren, Sarah, Sianne and Callum.

RIP my mum.

In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you Mommy, you did not go alone,

For part of us went with you, the day God called you home.

You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide,

And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same,

But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again".

Although we... loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

We will love and miss you dearly Mommy. At peace at last....

Dream Lover on the main stage

The musical revue Dream Lover has been the attraction on main stage in March, occupying the slot from March 10 to 26. The show features songs from four of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 50s, 60s and 70s, Neil Sedaka, Connie Francis, Bobby Darin and Carole King, and stars a cast of 35 singers and dancers. The show has been directed by Stan Higgins, with choreography by June Cloete and costume design by Collina Mvududu of the Reps Wardrobe, providing her first input as costume designer. Marc Thomas is the show’s narrator and singers include Nikki Ziehl, Dean Jones, Innocent Museve, Faith Ganyau, Andre Breytenbach, Rumbi Chimunda and many others, including some great newcomers to Reps and to the stage. Twelve exciting young dancers from June Cloete’s academy are the dance cast. The show run ends on Saturday March 26, with performances at 7pm each night (except Sundays and Mondays) and a matinee on Saturday March 26 (2.30pm). The music of the show has broad appeal and will be enjoyed especially by people who like some of the older music of the rock and pop era. Please spread the word and get these shows well supported! Advance booking is, of course, open at The Spotlight.

Humble Boy in Theatre Upstairs

Graham Crutchley directs this stunning drama in Theatre Upstairs, running at 7pm each day from Thursday March 24 to Saturday April 2 (preview March 23 and additional matinee on April 2 at 2.30pm). The cast includes Alex Fairlie, Fiona Garrity, Joe Levey, Mike Blackburn, Kyla Render and Betty Hobbs. As always, Graham has selected an excellent play and its unusual setting and staging will be surprising and pleasing for audiences. A short run means advance booking is a very good idea.

Rent occupies the main stage in early April

The excellent musical Rent comes to the stage in Zimbabwe for the first time in April, when Zane E Lucas directs this exciting production for Reps. Cast includes Josh Ansley, Zoran Zec, Tina Masawi, Patrick Barrett and others. It’s a contemporary musical with a message and will have special appeal to younger audiences – but it carries a PG16 restriction. Zane’s choice of productions are always on target and this show promises to be one of the hits of 2011, coming hot on the heels of his wins of best production and best director awards in the Reps Afdis Awards event. Book now – it is a very short run because of HIFA moving in just after final night. Opening night is Thursday April 7 (preview night April 6) and closing night is Saturday April 16.

HIFA back again

Great news is that HIFA will once again incorporate the two theatres at Reps. The theme of the festival is The Engagement Party and some very exciting shows are planned for Reps main stage and Theatre Upstairs. HIFA 2011 runs from April 26 to May 2 and tickets will be on sale at the Harare Gardens venue early in April. We welcome HIFA back and look forward to a week of thrilling theatrical treats.

AGM set for April 10

A reminder to all members that the Repertory Players’ AGM will be held in the main stage auditorium at 11am on Sunday April 10 and everyone is encouraged to come along and not only see what happens but have your voice heard if you have thoughts and view on one or more issues. Entertainment will be provided in the bar afterwards, along with a meal, so make a morning and afternoon of it. Don’t say “I’ll leave it to the others” but rather come and be part of the decision-making process in Reps.

Allan Shaw came and went

It was delightful to have had the company of Allan Shaw here in January and February and we thank him for coming out and giving of his time so freely to (a) provide a design for a revamped Theatre Upstairs and (b) run a series of useful workshops. Allan has lost none of his expert touch when it comes to theatre and Reps in particular and we were all delighted to have had him here. Allan was manager of Reps for many years and was involved with scores of productions – apparently more than 150 of them! – and is one of the ‘greats’ in Reps’ history. Thanks to British Airways and British Airways operated by Comair for bring him here and taking him home for free!

May 15 is a date to diarise
On Sunday May 15, there will be a quiz in the members’ bar at 11am, followed by lunch and an afternoon of wine and beer tasting – courtesy of Afdis, Moldon Marketing and Christine Sandford. Watch out for specific news on this day, but diarise it now as it promises to be great fun for all.

Upgrades continue
Work is continuing on various improvements, ranging from gardens and exteriors, to water leaks and electrical problems, and from upgrading the children’s playground to the refashioning of the bar patio. Jenni Ferguson and Tim Garrard are working with Tada Teak on an exciting new look for the patio and plans are now being made for a new look for the foyer bar, with the support of iWayAfrica, successor to MWEB Zimbabwe.

Did you know …

… that members can pre-order drinks in the bar when a show is taking place at Reps? All you need do is order and pay for your drinks before the start of the show and then at interval it will be waiting for you in a pre-allocated placement slot in the bar (those numbered ‘holes in the wall’). This means that on busy nights there’s no need to queue for drinks – just come in, collect your tray and enjoy! This has been a long-standing tradition but of late people have not been making use of the facility – only to find that the bar is really busy (say, on opening nights) during interval and are having to wolf down drinks to get back into their seats on time.

And now a competition
Win tickets for the closing night of Dream Lover this week: all you need do is send to reps@zol.co.zw your name and contact cell number and an answer to this easy question: what is the surname of the Connie whose music is featured in Dream Lover?

Until next time, best wishes
Erin Cooper, Society Secretary
