Rusape History

HISTORY SOCIETY CHAT LINE

Dear Member,

[Rob Burrett calling...]

Does anyone come from Rusape? I was going around the town the other day and have several heritage-related questions for which no one there could help:

  • I am looking for any contacts or information on the Polish Refugees who were based there in and after WW2. Especially interested in the graves in the overgrown cemetery more or less opposite Makoni Club.
  • Where is the earlier Rusape cemetery. The dates on the one opposite Makoni Club are not as early as the first years of the town. Are they at one of the churches or another area. Note I am not looking at the current cemetery just out of town nor the one out near Saint Faith’s. There must be graves pre-1910.
  • What is the story about the bell tower opposite the magistrate’s buildings? There was once a plaque but that has gone.

Many thanks

Rob

Stolen car in SA

From: Shepherd Hondoyemoto Shepherd.Hondo@econet.co.zw Sent: Wednesday, April 20, 2016 11:46 PM

Econet learnt with sadness the experience of Mr John Trombar when he lost his vehicle in South Africa on the 9th of March 2016 and would like to appreciate him for sharing his experience to enable this community to take caution when travelling, especially out of the country.

In response to this unfortunate incident and the need to protect vehicles, Econet would like to offer this society a solution in the form of Econet|ConnectedCar. This is a world class vehicle tracking and monitoring system which monitors and relays vehicle data and reports to owner on the geographic location and status of their vehicles. In company set ups, this helps fleet owners and managers to locate as well as effectively manage and monitor their vehicles remotely via any web portal on a tablet, smart phone or desktop computer in real time.

This also allows users to save money on numerous operating costs by optimising their fleet’s fuel efficiency, better managing driver performance, streamlining reporting, improving routing as well as making efficient use of vehicles.

The standard installation fee is $50 per vehicle but Econet would like to offer a special rate of $30 per car to all members of this community who want the service before end of June 2016. After installation Econet|ConnectedCar customers will pay the normal $20 subscription per month. Roaming whenever vehicles travel outside of Zimbabwe will be charged at normal international roaming rates.

Customers can write to EconetConnectedCar@econet.co.zw or call 0774222979 or 0774222653 for more information. We look forward to serving you, and please do not hesitate to get in touch for any issues needing clarity.

Kind Regards

Shepherd Hondo

CHERYL RODRIGUES

“Braveheart” – oil painting done by Cheryl

BIOGRAPHY OF CHERYL RODRIGUES

15th December 1956 ~ 29th March 2016

Cheryl was born on the 15th December 1956 in sunny Rhodesia. She comes from a family of avid motorcycle enthusiasts and rode a motorcycle herself in her youth. As a young girl, she was labelled as “quite a tough cookie” and some what a bit of a tom boy. She was only 5ft tall but nothing stopped her fiery, witty and determined spirit from achieving anything that she set her mind to. As well as riding motorbikes, and racing her cousin’s go kart around the farm roads, affectionately named “the race track”. She also did a spot of ballet, which she hated. I think her parents were trying to encourage her to be more like a girl. She made all the clothes she wore too. Cheryl was a stunning woman with brownish black hair and beautiful brown eyes which would captivate your soul if you ever did have the pleasure of meeting her.

She was a very intelligent lady who excelled at school and wanted to go onto university. Her command of the English language was exemplary as well as her artistic skills and she could play the piano and piano accordion by ear fluently. Cheryl painted some of the most beautiful works of art, which people would ask if they were in fact paintings or photographs. Her attention to detail was impeccable.

Cheryl met my Dad, Johnny Rodrigues in 1974. She was crossing the road in front of his car which was parked at the robots…..he had never seen such a beautiful woman in all his life. He told her that he would be coming to visit that afternoon, to which she aptly replied…”well, I won’t be there”. On arriving at her house in the morning, as promised, she had gone off on her motorbike to the swimming pool. On her return, later that afternoon, Johnny then told her that he was going to marry her; her response was “sure buck”. Needless to say, they fell madly in love and were married in the Roman Catholic Cathedral on 4th Street in Rhodesia. A year later, Lorraine came along followed by Brigitte and later on Shane.

During Cheryl’s 42 years of married life to her love, Johnny, she played soft ball and was selected to play on an all girls football team in the Curry Cup in South Africa which she received her Provincial colours for. After relocating back to Zimbabwe she was selected to fish for Zimbabwe under the National Bank Angling Team and fished the Tri- Nations International in Namibia and did very well. She received her National colours as a result of her efforts.

Cheryl also started writing a book about the ZCTF and Johnny, which she only completed 12 chapters, which we hope to complete and make it available to the public so everyone can hear her story.

She supported her husband Johnny, her children, grand-children and son in-law Gavin, wholeheartedly in everything they did. She was Johnny’s fishing partner attended all the car races that he and their children competed in as well as supported her children in their karate at the World Championships in 2014 where her daughter Lorraine and grand-daughter Kylie both won silver medals. Her son Shane has also made a name for himself with his life like pencil drawings of animals too.

Cheryl always loved animals. In 1998, Johnny and Cheryl formed The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force. Cheryl would do oil paintings of the animal’s native to Zimbabwe to try and raise awareness and funds to help the ZCTF grow. The funds raised were used to help send anti poaching units run by Johnny in the Kariba area to stop the netting of tiger fish. They also raised funds towards saving Hwange when it was hit by the severe drought in 2005. The ZCTF bought fuel, spares for pumps, uniforms and boots and assisted towards the National Park’s ranger’s wages during that time. Cheryl accompanied Johnny on one of the trips to Hwange to deliver the first batch of 10 000 litres of fuel, from a total of 65 000 litres actually delivered. After installing the pumps and the water began to pump into the pan, they witnessed the thirsty animals coming out of the bushes to drink the much needed water. Many different species came down to the watering hole that day. Cheryl was awe struck by the euphoric atmosphere in the air whilst the animals drank water at the same time…… they did not sleep that night, they sat at the watering hole savouring the moment before them.

There are so many instances whereby the efforts of Johnny and Cheryl resulted in animals being relocated to safer areas, M99 being purchased for the local vets too. Only a few of their accomplishments have been spoken about as there are too many to mention. This was all made possible from the proceeds of Cheryl’s paintings and the many donations that came in from animal lovers all over the world.

Cheryl sat tirelessly for days and nights sending out the ZCTF reports and helped Johnny expose the truth about the famous Lion, Cecil who was killed by the infamous Walter Palmer. This led to the Cecil Act being passed by the US government preventing all imports of trophy hunts from Zimbabwe into America as well as many air lines coming on board to stop the transportation of any trophies in the future. The United Nations have tabled a wildlife act to protect all endangered wildlife and aquatic life around the world. We still await the outcome of their decision. There will be a Cecil rally in Washington DC, USA on the 30th July 2016 in honour of Cecil and the growing continuous efforts to save the endangered lion. This has all come about because of the Cecil Act, the King of the Jungle, Cecil, never died in vain. To date this has to be one of the greatest achievements accomplished by the ZCTF and for conservation world wide.

Today, the world has lost a great conservationist; a lover of all things created by God and has left us empty, full of despair and sorrow. Although she has taken a leave of absence to go and help God care for Cecil the Lion and Tusker the Elephant and the animals she so dearly loved and tried to save, she did leave us with one thing………..her legacy. A legacy that will live on in our hearts forever and that we will continue to fight for the animals until our last breath and we meet her again because she wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“Take nothing but pictures,

Kill nothing but time,

Leave nothing but footprints”

John Kay

The quote above written by John Kay, pretty much sums up everything my Mom, Cheryl Rodrigues believed in and lived by……..

Driving Licences

Annoyed by the $30 ‘hire’ charge levied for the use of a driving school vehicle in a VID driving test, I pressed my daughter’s instructor on why she was not allowed to use our small Mazda 323 to take her driving test. He, and is colleagues in the yard, passionately assured me this was impossible.

Thinking it a tall tale, I went to the Senior Instructor on duty. He categorically assured me that no such rule exists and students are indeed able to take a driving test in a vehicle belonging to either one of their parents with the following stipulations:

1)      The vehicle must have a manual gear system and must be of a size easily manageable by the student ie no big 4x4’s, etc.

2)      the owner of the car should be a parent of the student taking the test ie. both parties should bear the same surname. In the event of a different surname, original supporting documents to this effect should be provided.

3)      On booking the driving test, the student is to bring the relevant original car papers, along with a supporting original letter from the parent (and owner of that particular vehicle) authorizing their child to drive said vehicle. A copy of ID documents for both parent and child should be attached.

Please can you let people on your mailshot know this. It may save struggling parents a lot of money considering nobody passes first time.

Kind regards

Fran

Fines

NEW ZRP TRAFFIC FINES SCHEDULE

A copy of the new ZRP Traffic Fines Schedule which is currently in use has been obtained by AA Zimbabwe and is attached for the information and guidance of members. We suggest that you print out a copy and keep it in your vehicle so that, if you have the misfortune of being fined, you can confirm that the offence is legitimate and that the amount of the fine is correct. Many of the previous fines have been increased (usually doubled) but there is no single fine in excess of $20.

It is apparent that there are some errors on this schedule. For instance reference is made to reflectors being 35mm in diameter (which was the previous minimum size) instead of 60mm diameter, and a minimum overall size of 4000 sq mm (when it should be 3000 sq mm).

We are not aware that this schedule has been gazetted by way of a Statutory Instrument. If not officially promulgated it is not legally in force. Notwithstanding this apparent omission, the schedule is being used by the ZRP.

ROAD SIDE GROWTH DANGEROUS FOR VEHICLES, PEDESTRAINS AND WILDLIFE

Sadly this is still not dealt with seasonally by the Authorities with not just grass growing right up to the side of the tar but dense bush and trees starting to grow over the tar roads in areas.

This poses a danger to pedestrians, vehicles and wildlife. Not only because of the seasonal Lion activity in Kariba but also on Game corridors/road crossings, where coming around a corner and not being able to see much due to the tall and dense growth only to find Elephant, Buffalo, Lion, Bush buck etc. on the road.

This leads to accidents and unnecessary trauma to ALL.

Every year KAWFT cuts the main Game Corridor between Cutty Sark and the top Baobab turn off to lessen the drama.

This year a kind resident has done the cutting and we will go in and tidy up where the grass cutter could not reach.

Big THANKS  and appreciation for this as well as to Breezes for slashing the area they maintain litter free from AMC to Caribbea Bay Bus stop. Also to Padenga who cuts the roadsides from Kariba to Makuti every year and is in the process of doing so now.

TELEPHONE WIRES AND WILDLIFE – April 3 2016

At the weekend on the Cutty Sark road an Elephant got his tusks caught up in the “low hanging” telephone wires pictured below and when he finally managed to untangle himself he was very very angry.

The Ele caught up in these is the same Gentleman mentioned below in the Road Block

ELE TELE WIRE TUSKS CAUGHT C SARK RD 3 APRIL 2016 IMG_2395.JPG  ELE TELE WIRE TUSKS CAUGHT C SARK RD 3 APRIL 2016 IMG_2396.JPG  ELE TELE WIRE TUSKS CAUGHT C SARK RD 3 APRIL 2016 IMG_2397.JPG  ELE TELE WIRE TUSKS CAUGHT C SARK RD 3 APRIL 2016 IMG_2398.JPG

We have been pointing this problem out to Telone for almost  2 years now regarding hanging wires, wires left rolled up on the road side.

Snares are being made from these telephone wires and Wildlife is getting caught up in the hanging wires as well.

All of the below photos are taken from March through to July 2015 and still these lines are left for Wildlife to harm themselves in and for poachers to make good use of the wire.

We would like to remind the public that being in possession of copper wire holds a minimum jail sentence of 10 years and if they are made up into snares, more time is added on. Our Kariba Authorities have had a number of criminals sentenced for the above the past year or so.

Telephone wires on the Baobab ext road ( on your right after Cutty Sark road, before Batonka turn off) were also photographed last year, hanging low for an Elephant or Kudu to get tangled up  in.

The telephone wires pictured below, by Nyamhunga  turn off have been hanging on the ground for over a year now.

Zebra have been seen trying to pass through them and there will be continued problems with these. The same story goes for the Airport area and along the main road through to Makuti.

The girls eventually ended up in the thick bush down the side of C/Bay towards the shore line.

COWS IMG-20160404-WA0000.jpg   IMG_2394.JPG   COWS IMG-20160404-WA0001.jpg

A Kariba resident called at the office at early morning 30th March to say there was a Cow herd on the road near the back gate of Carribbea Bay and some others further on. This is "work time" traffic time, so we needed to get on the road and calm the traffic and Eles down as the girls were with the little ones and were becoming extremely agitated with all the traffic.

The girls eventually ended up in the thick bush down the side of C/Bay towards the shore line.

The boys … .well we have “Sucker” on our foreheads and they know we are going to give them a full on escort, up front and back, to where they have decided to go.

So after visiting with the girls these 3 decided to head towards AMC and Polly’s take away.

These boys hang around Baobab through to Chawara side and most will recognize “Rip” van winkle – large piece of left ear missing. He has tried snapping an electric fence a number of times.

IMG_2378.JPG

Rip” van winkle

“Toothpick” is a stroppy young boy !!! – no photo of him on this day as he was playing at being a Mountain Goat down the steep sides of both sides of the road.

A Gentleman of note is this one (am sure he is a sibling of our beloved Sorefoot). This boy with his left ear tattered down the side and right tusk missing a piece, has been escorted before and whilst blocking traffic for a while he then moves off the road to let vehicles pass and then moves on down the road again, urging us to continue forward please …

IMG_2382.JPG

2 hours later they peeled off the road down into the bush behind Marinland Workshops.

SAME DAY – LATE AFTERNOON  - ignorant and selfish people

Everyone heading home after work.

KAWFT coming from Mahombekombe side, rounded the second corner before AMC to find Rip and Toothpick back up on the road.

Parked in a precarious and dangerous area between two corners, frantic phone call to Bob Collet at Marineland to please come up and slow down the end of day traffic coming from the other side, past or from AMC.

Gentleman Ele was now visiting his bin outside AMC/Polly’s and would not allow anyone near or to pass, until he had finished searching for any treats – So Bob was stuck there !!!

A white car came speeding around from AMC side, passed between Rip and KAWFT, did a fast turnaround behind us at the first lay by, sped back and stopped the car just in front of us and at the very most 4mtrs away from Rip, who was on the side of the road.

The driver took photos, eles were calm so no drama.

Then the driver advised his wife holding a small baby, to get out the car and stand between the Elephant and the car so he could get a photo of them !!!

The Elephant’s response was obvious and the lady and her baby are VERY LUCKY that they were not tossed and trampled by the Ele.

The lady jumped back in the car and the driver sped off, leaving KAWFT praying that Rip did not continue his charge onto us as we were unable to go forward or backwards. A very scary few minutes ensued as the Ele calmed down again, leaving us in shock and VERY ANGRY with the behavior of this person.

As normal,  selfish and ignorant people put other people’s lives in complete danger and those of Wildlife at risk by their inconsiderate and completely foolish actions.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals – Mahatma Ghandi

SAFE TRAVEL IN MOZAMBIQUE

From: Archipelago Resort Accounts accounts@archipelago-resort.com Sent: Monday, April 11, 2016 10:13 AM

SAFE TRAVEL IN MOZAMBIQUE

Good evening all. Just a quick note to let you know about the convoy between muxungue and the save bridge. We travelled it on sat 9th April. We arrived at the garage at 11.30 and the convoy rolled in from the save 10 mins later. No incidences recorded. The army were very efficient and organised and got us all into line and off we set at 12.50. We ended up near the front which we have been told is NOT where u want to be BUT I will tell you we travelled the convoy the last time it was in place a couple years ago and being at the back or middle was not that organised. This time being at the front was very organised and the military were very efficient. We travelled at a steady 60km/h with the military going up and down next to us and every now and then there were military stationed on the road patrolling. We stayed away from the buses and military cars and arrived safe and sound at the save river at about 3.00. No issues to report and we felt very secure during the trip. And now we are fully enjoying our annual Moz holiday at Lula's Paradise.. Jacomina

Rusape warning

I just wanted to share what happened to me and friend on Friday in rusape.

I had just taken the turn to Juliasdale from main road and pulled off to side of road parking parallel to get a phone out of the rear of car. There were no lines to indicate how to park.

as I was about to get back into the car a man approached and as I got into the car a few more men and a woman appeared and threw a flat bar with sharp spikes under my front drivers wheel. They were all shouting saying I didn't park properly. It was quite scary and I wasn't sure what to do.

They were saying there was a fine of $65 to which I was saying I wanted to see identification. No one could produce any but the next thing a truck arrived with Rusape council police painted on the side. I got out and explained I had stopped for less than a minute and the man said the fine was $30. This all happened at around 6 30 am and after paying the fine we noticed another vehicle clamped as well along the roadi was given a receipt from the rusape town council environment section.

please warn people not to stop along this stretch as obviously they are targeting tourists
