LOWRY – JOYCE nee DEALL - 99th birthday

LOWRY – JOYCE nee DEALL –

 

Joyce Lowry will celebrate her 99th birthday on 6th September, 2014.   Joyce was one of 9 children, Sonny, Mary Victor, Basil, John, Bernard Lesley and Jill. 

 

Joyce met her husband John Lowry through her brother Sonny who Managed Mazowe Citrus Estate at the time.  They married & together they farmed on Machiroli Farm in the Darwendale, Zimbabwe, raising three children; Lois Lowry (Deceased 2005) married Stewart McIntosh who had two children, Graeme (Zimbabwe) and John (UK); Alex Lowry married Ant Morris and together have three children, Sandra, David and Douglas and Sean Lowry married Sue and they had three children, Samantha, Kevin and Tommy while farming in Darwendale with Joyce. 

 

Joyce has 8 grandchildren and 14  Great Grandchildren in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Australia and UK.  Joyce is now in Tudor Gardens Retirement village in Scottburgh, KwaZulu Natal. 

Sonny was Manager at Mazoe Citrus Estate and later at Premier Citrus Estates in Mutare.

 Victor and Basil both farmed, one at Centenary & the other at Umvukwes.

 

John received the DRC, the Croix de Guerre, OBE, and the DSO  during WW2  where he served in the RRAF; after the war he became Air Commodore of the Rhodesian Air Force.

Basil was also in the RRAF and Victor was in the British army and fought in North Africa.

Bernard was a tail gunner in the Wellington aeroplanes but Lesley was too young to go to war but joined the Rhodesian Air Force after the war.

 

All 4 of Joyce’s brothers returned home from the WW2 which was a real blessing.   Sonny was in the Essential Services in Rhodesia so wasn’t allowed to enlist much to his annoyance!

Joyce & her sisters Jill & Mary were all nurses in Rhodesia and South Africa.
