UPDATE - SNARED ELEPHANT

UPDATE - SNARED ELEPHANT -  ZAMBEZI RIVER/NYAMOUMBA - 28/8/17

Trust Details At Bottom Of Email

REMEMBER: When Driving or walking,

Animals always have the right of way !!!!

Further to our ALERTS X 3 !! sent out on 24/8/18,  see below update.

UPDATE

Drs Keith Dutlow and Lisa Marabini/AWARE Trust, left Kariba Friday.

Having had no sight of the Zebra we were searching for nor the Buffalo Parks Rangers were searching for !!, they headed on to Nyamoumba to again try and track down the snared young Ele bull.

Having no luck once again, they gave one last search on Sunday before they were going to head out.

MIRACLE !!! he strode out onto the road in front of them.

They darted and removed the thick cable snare that was deep in his leg.

Watch out for their update and footage when they return to the bright lights of Harare and have internet.

We will share their post on KAWFT facebook page and email update.

WELL DONE and THANK YOU to everyone once again for their assistance and continued effort to find this boy and for those that have assisted towards some of the costs for fuel and drugs.

Another precious animal saved and the agony removed.

If you can assist with costs for fuel and meds, it will go a long way in keeping the kitty topped up for continual emergency calls like this one.

Darting/drugs to tend to an Elephant costs $300.00 upwards just on the meds plus there is the cost of fuel traveling 6 1/2 hours one way to get to this boy.

FOUND !!! and treated THANK YOU everyone involved

Every voice raised in support of wildlife makes a difference…..

ALERT NO 3 SNARED YOUNG ELEPHANT BULL - ZAMBEZI RIVER / NYAMOUMBA

Towards the end of July we had a call and these photos below from Nyamoumba Fishing and Birding Lodge regarding this poor fellow below.

We made coms with the Parks Area Manager Marangora and their patrol in the area was put on alert to hopefully get a visual on him.

We think it is the same boy the Parks Patrol reported a couple of months prior.

Arrangements were made with AWARE Trust Vets to travel through and collect a Snr. Ranger on the way through.

Unfortunately the Ele was only seen when he appeared outside the bedroom at 10pm !! This was an unsuccessful trip and the AWARE Vets Keith and Lisa returned home after 2 days.

Thank you to  - Parks Marangora for arranging all, along with the unexpected fly over they called in from the Hemmersbach organisation,

Nyamoumba Fishing and Birding Lodge – Moira & Sam & for accommodating Aware Vets Drs Keith Dutlow and Lisa Marabini.

See their story on this Facebook link   https://www.facebook.com/AWARETrustZimbabwe/posts/13520813415

We are still in continual coms with Nyamoumba Fishing and Birding Lodge and Keith and Lisa will be heading there again from Kariba in the hopes of finding this boy and giving him the urgent treatment he needs and deserves.

If you can assist with costs for fuel and meds, it will go a long way in keeping the kitty topped up for continual emergency calls like this one

Please advise on the below if you are at the river and have sighting or suspected sighting with the listed points at the top of the email.

All information possible will assist with the finding of the animal or herd and the sooner the more chance of removing the snare, giving any needed medical attention and saving another life.

THANK YOU ….

Thank you

Please put out a message of thanks to our amazing community.

I was involved in a horrendous accident on Sunday night outside headlands, where we ploughed into a herd of mombies with no time to avoid collision.

Please thank the amazing Zimbabweans who stopped to help, “Chipo” and others with assistance and help.

Our car was left stranded on the centre-line of the road in a very dangerous position in the dark unable to move, and I made a mental note of the things that could have helped make the situation safer.

For all other Zimbabweans who may end up in a similar situation:

Have a torch handy

Have the numbers for “road angels” readily available

Keep cell phones charged and with airtime at all time

4 triangles is better than two

A TOW ROPE WOULD HAVE BEEN A HUGE HELP

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY: DO NOT DRIVE IN THE DARK ON THE COUNTRY ROADS

Thanks to all again, and thank God nobody was hurt

Haka Game Park Wins Prestigious Corporate Care Award

The Advertising and Publicity Club (APC) presented its 2017 Annual Corporate Care Awards at a cocktail party held at the viewing platform of the Mukuvisi Woodlands on 22nd August 2017.

Haka Game Park, only 10km from the capital’s city centre at Cleveland Dam in Greendale, won the prestigious Corporate Care award for 2017. They were awarded with a unique trophy crafted from recycled bottle tops and wire in the shape of a Baobab tree.  This year’s worthy runner-up was the Ballantyne Park Conservancy Trust.

The APC which was established in 1963, has given the prestigious award annually to individuals or business enterprises that have shown exceptional care and concern for the environment, through their initiatives and commitment to projects that improve the community. The corporate care program identifies and honors companies judged upon key criteria, including: performance, long-term sustainability, innovation and community value.

“We are proud to have 2 such worthy winners in Harare. Both have shown dedication and determination to protect valuable parts of Harare’s environment and provide residents with much-needed recreational facilities”, said Mr Simon Pitt in his introductory speech to the awards.

Mr Mohammed Surtee, with the support of the Surtee family, has established and operated Haka Game Park for over 20 years, providing protection to the flora and fauna of the flourishing wetland site. Through concerted efforts they have managed to curb the rampant poaching of animals, sand, fish and indiscriminate cutting of trees for firewood. A major achievement has been to have the site declared a Ramsar Wetland site thereby offering national and international protection for the wetlands. The 1500ha site, which is leased from the City of Harare, is surrounded by residential suburbs. Apart from an indigenous tree nursery and organic mushroom project, the park hosts a variety of over 200 animals including wildebeest, eland, zebra, water buck as well as impala and is a favourite site for bird watchers, too. It offers family picnic sites for braaing, horse rides and game walks, ideal for Harare residents as well as other visitors.

Ballantyne Park Conservancy Trust has restored the Ballantyne Park from a public dump site to a beautiful area which residents can enjoy. Extensive work has gone into restoring the dam which was damaged over the years, thereby providing a year round water supply for the numerous birds which come to nest in the area. Monthly family events have attracted the community back to the park, and the Trust has plans for further restoration.

Past winners of the Advertising and Publicity Club Corporate Care Award have included: The Business Council for Sustainable Development, Miracle Missions, The Harare News, The Greystone Park Nature Preserve, Environment Africa and Rooney’s Hire Services.

Ends.

APC 2017 Runner-up:
(L to R): Ballantyne Park Conservancy Trust members, Miss Sue Burr, Mr Sean Quinlan (Chairman), Mrs Gill Rogers

ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR AUGUST 2017

ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR AUGUST 2017

As August draws to a close we see the start of spring! … What a pleasure to welcome the warmer weather into our lives but please still be very alert and think of your security and the safety of your family and businesses. Do not leave windows and doors wide open without the grill across securely locked, and where possible the alarm activated at ALL times, especially in areas not being used, even in daylight hours.

There is definitely an increase in crime with theft… cash being the biggest sort after commodity. There is not a lot of cash around so please make sure the cash you do receive is safe. All jewellery and valuable items to be kept in a safe locked area, do not leave them where they are easy to access. Please be vigilant when leaving and entering your premises of loitering outside gates or on verges, and alert others on the neighbourhood network.  For assistance report to the nearest Police Station

Smash & Grabs are still prevalent so be wise and keep all valuables out of sight and not on the seat.  It is advisable to drive with all doors firmly locked at all times.

Roadblocks are still very evident make sure all items required are up to date with the regulations stipulated, keep a copy of the Big Sky cubbyhole booklet at hand, know your rights and stand your ground.  Free vehicle compliance tests are carried out at Big Sky in Pomona and Avondale

Please be aware when parking in public parking areas and check your door manually to make sure that your remote has not been blocked or jammed. when leaving your car.   It’s so easy to be wise after the event but let’s make it second nature to check.

Let’s ALL fight this crime together  - stay ALERT and SAFE !
