Safwguard Breakin report

Crime has taken an upwards swing and be aware of two real changes.

1.    Break in and theft from vehicles- at home and public areas. At home all have been from vehicles parked outside. A very cost effective solution to give early warning is an outside alarm sensor to cover the parking area at home. Far less expensive than repairs to the vehicle.

2.    Break in through the roof in commercial areas- we have mentioned this, a number of times over the last year, and it is on the increase. Make sure your security control equipment is in a protected area and cannot be tampered with, keep it away from staff and public eyes, and check your alarm coverage. Consider additional sensors/physical countermeasures to detect/ deter access to the roof

Hi everyone,

We are Ben & Kevin, the two french guys that have been robbed last december.

We had that bad experience to meet 4 zimbabweans people that betrayed our trust to get us in their fake combi, and finally stole everything from us near Chitungwiza.

After this incident, it was difficult for us to continue to trust people we encountered but we had the incredible surprise to get an amazing support (material and moral support) coming from your network ! Many of you offered their help and it convinced us to move forward from this bad experience.

After an event like this one, when you start to doubt about human being, it is just incredible to witness so much generosity. Finally, it is really thanks to you that we decided to continue our trip based on human trust.

We have spent one month and a half in France to get new passports and visas and we will now head to Asia for 6 months, to discover and analyse the evolution of traditional communities. For this trip, we carry some clothes and backpacks that have been given by you !

So again : Thanks a lot to you all ! It is really touching to see the support we had, and may generous people like you be many in Asia !

A la prochaine !

Kids again

I remember a good golfer ribbing and pushing his son, who was surely destined to be a good pro golfer one day, so much that the child gave up playing altogether.  Indeed in later life they are disconnected from each other.  Tok

…………….

Oh my word Mike that is a very tender SPOT I heartily agree with your comment, it sometimes an embarrassing disgrace to see SOME parents behaving on the sideline of a sportsfield or swimming pool.   there is nothing better than a bunch of parents quietly enjoying and supporting their children at school functions.   Our children sadly had to go to boarding school, no choice, and we were not able to attend many functions, when we did, what fun it was with wonderful good competitive spirit.    Why does this have to change.

…………

We agree with you 100%. Well done for reminding us all encourage our kids to challenge themselves (not others) and to shine whenever they are ready. Regards Arlette

…………….

Interesting take on parental push for sporting excellence. It would be useful to balance this view with some perspective on how much it took to support the success stories. Of course we now have the benefit of many biographies to get the view from those kids that were pushed hardest.  I make no distinction between sports and academics on this one. The jury is out on how hard one can push but I take my hat off to those folks that struck that largely elusive balance between pushing too hard and just hard enough!! And of cause got the results they sought without alienating the kids totally! I know few parents who are comfortable with being compared to Andre Agassi's old man, for example! Otherwise luckily for most sporting codes coaches these days offer different training packages for different end results. The good coaches also give honest advise on the potential of athletes!  Tough call! Vitalis
……………

Yes agree with you it is our Kids life and we should not Thrust our dreams upon them, encourage them yes especially if they are talented and excel in their chosen field, do your best to give them every opportunity to achieve their goals and wish them luck.  As a Parent I feel you would have done your duty and your children will appreciate your Support more than pushing them to excel. Athena

……………

Children growing up now are faced with too many pressures which we did not have back in the day, yes we want mini 'Kirsty's' but truth be told they develop and excel at their own pace. The poor kids have this notion that they must do it like this, they must do it like that and true back in the day we as parents never did things as we want it laid out. Please understand, I'm not putting down parents who push their kids hard but when kids fail to reach up to our dreams, we only end up with broken dreams and lots of emotional patch ups.... My son showed talent in soccer from six years old, my dreams were that he excels to professional levels.....his becoming an engineer and taking up law, works at night as a bar tender to make his extra money, I'm glad I never went the soccer route...he discovered his niche all on his own..

…………..

I thought this book I found explained it well (See attachments) . Applies to parents and well as coaches.  Regards Jill.

……………….

You're absolutely right Mike.  I *hated* school sports.  I would never, ever push my son to participate in a sporting activity if he didn't want to.  The enormous pressure on children to participate in physical competitive activities is unbelievable.  I will never understand it.  What is the point of it?  Why are we so obsessed with our children physically proving they're better than everyone else?  And what about those kids who don't come in the top three?  How do they feel?  How does it affect them, when so much value is placed on succeeding and being better than everyone, and then they're not? What emotional turmoil does that leave them with?  My child is so much more than his ability to kick, hit or throw a ball.  If only we valued compassion and kindness and individuality as much as we valued being better than someone else.  This world, let alone this country, would be a much different place.  I endeavour to teach my child that everyone is equal in their value, that there are real world issues that deserve his energy more than bettering someone physically.  Perhaps if our children were valued for their unique abilities as individuals from a young age, they wouldn't feel so tempted by turning to excessive alcohol consumption and prescription drugs as teenagers and adults as a coping mechanism to deal with not being who and what everyone has expected them to be their entire lives. Sick of Competition

………….

I concur. Encourage them and let them find their own way. I always make sure I attend my little girl’s sporting events and support her to the max. Like you, my parent’s never came to watch me play any of my sports, especially in the latter years. So I make sure that I never miss a single one.  Cheers, Kumbi

………..

Couldn’t agree more.  Most good teachers (and parents) will pick up on talent and encourage it.  As an ex-high school academic teacher, who still has much contact with the teaching world, I have had the same experience with parents who do not understand that no amount of pushing and extra lessons are going to make their child into doctor/lawyer/engineer material. We’ve known kids who’ve been moved from one school to another, because they simply won’t accept this fact.

All kids need as much encouragement as possible from their parents and teachers, but they  should never be pushed into a mould. Many kids only realize their potential after they’ve left school, even when they’re lucky enough to make it to university.  As a mother of a daughter who was in various sports teams, I used to have to block my ears sometimes when sitting next to these screaming mothers.

Kids can suffer serious self-esteem problems in later life if they don’t match up to their parents’  unrealistic expectations.

………..

Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery nicely put Mike J Bravo. Panagis from Athens
More comment

I was chatting to a well-known sports coach recently about how hard some parents push their kids. They tell her that they want their daughter to be like Kirsty Coventry or their son like Mark Phelps. They pass comments like: “Little Steph is now swimming 10 km a day and she almost broke Kirsty’s Under 12 Backstroke Record last month” . She said that it was often Moms and Dads that had never been successful at sport in their schooldays

The poor kids don’t have time to experience those things that really matter when growing up.

I don’t remember either of my folks ever coming along to watch me play sport at Junior school and there were hardly ever any parents watching us guys in the B and C teams. Then I was packed off to boarding school for my secondary education and told to work things out for myself.

I now look back at some of my peers that were all making the provincial teams with moms and dads screaming at them from the side lines throughout their school sports careers.

Most of them gave up exercise altogether once they were out of home in “the real world”.

My feeling is that you should encourage your kids regularly but remember that it is their life and we, as parents , are not there to thrust our dreams on our children.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Ciao

Mike G

Pushing children

Kids need to be pushed at sport and adapt learn to cope with sport pressures. After all this is the best way for them to gain self confidence and be  prepared for  life’s pressures later on. Sport is one of lifes best teachers about oneself and the limits one can achieve.  Regards  Tim

…………..

Totally agree with your comments.  Every child is different and shouldn't be made to feel inferior if he/she is not the best sportsperson or top of the class. ALL CHILDREN ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT AND HAVE THE SAME VALUE.  They should be encouraged to do THEIR best and not be compared to others.  The most important characters to teach a child is to be a fair person who tries their best, works hard and treats others with respect.

…………..

This is one of my favourite subjects - its a particular concern in ZW as most have no CLUE about Long Term Athlete Development - we are all looking for teenage superstars and

we are  constantly jeopardising the long term future of the athlete – that’s why we have so many talented school kids who never make it as elite level athletes.

…………

You are 200% correct. There seems to be an idea that all kids should be pushed to their limit in Zimbabwe. Around the world all pro athletes started at very very young ages and I think a lot of people feel if they push their kids hard at a young athlete they will become or have a chance to become pro athletes. Reality is that most pro athletes have been identified at a young age as having a skill or gift better than those around them and they are hand-picked and trained by professionals to get the best out of their ability without injury or risk to their health. They become pros.
As you, all my friends at school who were in the 1st teams and Zim teams left school and took a break from the harsh training environment and surprise surprise they never picked it up again. They were bored or burnt out. Those that took a more social approach to sport are still playing sport and keeping fit 20 years after school. In fact some of those who played very little at school went on to represent our national sides after school. So my opinion, unless you have a child who stands head and shoulders above the rest and clearly has the potential to do great things with sport as a profession, don't burn your child out and give them unrealistic expectations. It's not fair on your kids. Let them enjoy their sports at the level they are capable and at the level where it's fun for them. Sean

…………..

I think that children should be encouraged to ENJOY sport – and if they have any natural talent this will come through and then they can decide what to do with it.  Too many children lose out on their [never to be recovered] childhood years due to pressure from parents. Linda

………….

Hear hear – well done!!!  My daughter was a very good tennis player but I let her decide what her future would be.  She didn’t pursue a tennis career but still enjoys playing social tennis to this day.  There’s nothing worse than seeing pushy parents and you’ve got to feel for the poor kids….  As you say – parents want to live their dreams through their children.

……………

I was perhaps blest by parents who led by example.    They always demanded that I do my best but recognized that I was human.    I try to do the same to my children.   We are not here to live through our children, but to give them the tools to be successful, responsible members of society.  This we can only do by being that ourselves.

……………….

Yes I have seen some parents pushing their kids too hard and it’s ridiculous.  Some of our children have amazing sport talents and all that is required is good healthy encouragement.   One of my children has continued playing sport competitively into her university days and still loves the sport tremendously.   Incidentally we did not push her.  It was her choice.

……………

Hi Mike - You have raised some great points, and I couldn't agree with your more that many parents push their kids too hard.  To the detriment of our children we have become a parenting generation of 'To Much, To Soon' - both in the classroom and on the sports field.  But the cause is not helped by our schools who will push a 'good' Grade 2 up to play in a Grade 3 tournament ... even thought there are a few Grade 3's who would like to have played.  Schools should be practicing and encouraging DAP (Developmentally Appropriate Practices) by fielding more 'developmental' cricket teams and less 'Colts' teams.  Sport against other schools (Colts and Fillies) should be reserved for Grade 5's (and perhaps the odd brilliant Grade 4!).  Many parents (and teachers) push kids to the next level before their foundational skills are in place.  Children need to be children, and their childhoods should not be rushed.  You might find the attached article of interest.  J  http://www.bluemangollc.com/the-unconventional-guide-to-improving-handwriting-skills-part-ii/?utm_source=Blue+Mango+Newsletter&utm_campaign=4b8bcfcf36-&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_fe8a1690f0-4b8bcfcf36-341806909

Renaming of Roads

Govt names roads after Muzenda, Nkomo - New Zimbabwe 23/01/2015

FOURTH Street in Harare will be changed to Simon Vengai Muzenda Street, in

honour of the late vice-president who passed away in 2003, according to

the latest Government Gazette.

Main Street in Bulawayo will also be renamed Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo

Street. In December 2013 Nkomo's statue was erected in the same street and

at exactly the same spot where imperialist Cecil John Rhodes's statue

stood for decades.

Muzenda also known as the `Soul of the Nation' passed away in September

2003 while former vice-president Nkomo, fondly known as `Father Zimbabwe'

died in July 1999.

The two are interred at the National Heroes Acre in Harare and have been

key figures in Zimbabwean politics with Nkomo having been the main actor

during the liberation struggle.

The announcement was revealed by the minister of Local Government, Public

Works and National Housing, Ignatius Chombo in the Names (Alteration)

Amendment of Schedule) Notice, 2015.

However it could not be established when the two roads will be renamed and

if the local authorities concerned had been consulted on the issue.

Just after independence roads in Harare Central Business District were

renamed in honour of Zimbabwe's national heroes and other African icons

like former Mozambican and Tanzanian Presidents Samora Machel and Julius

Nyerere.

Other roads that were to be renamed with time include Union Avenue (Kwame

Nkrumah), Second Street (Sam Mujoma) and Baker Avenue (Nelson Mandela).

Road names were also changed in other cities like Bulawayo and Kwekwe.

Anti Hijack Trust January report

ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR JANUARY 2015

As the first month of 2015 is almost done and dusted let’s start by wishing you all a bright and successful 2015 .. may it be as ‘crime free’ as we, and that means YOU, the public make it. We face a challenging year ahead ! Keep security as a high priority on the TO DO list. There have been reports of theft from vehicles in public areas (car parks, garages etc) all happening in a short period …. It only takes seconds, and as we have a very high unemployment rate and loiterers in most of these areas please be extremely vigilant and do not leave your car unlocked or unattended for ANY reason or valuable items in view … put it all in the BOOT this includes the shopping .  When locking your vehicle please make sure that it is locked by checking your door physically as remotes and blockers have been used to ‘confuse’ the command to lock. This will mean that there is no evidence of a forced entry. An incident of being robbed of cash at knife point on returning to the vehicle in a public car park has been reported.    Schools are now back, be very aware and vigilant when dropping and picking up the children, most schools have security in these areas, but do not let your guard down as you are responsible for your vehicle not the school.

Do not carry large sums of money with you ….

Crime in Bulawayo

15/12/14 – 31/01/15

“We cannot with safety swerve from principle, we cannot violate justice, we cannot neglect mercy.” By Ellen G. White

HAPPY 2015 – May this year be as crime free from major crimes as last year.  If you had wondered what had happened to the previous updates, don’t worry, I took a sabbatical over November/December.

INSURANCE

As usual, at the beginning of the year, we look at our finances and where we are heading.  With the constant inflation of goods that we have to pay in US$ and the comparison with what one would pay in South Africa for the same, is quite ridiculous.

CARS

This also goes for cars.  If you have an accident, the cost is astronomical, especially since there are so many vehicles – pirate taxis’, ET’s etc that are owned by people who have not had them registered correctly, do not have insurance at ALL, yet still manage to drive on our roads illegally.  If you are involved in an accident with them, they will run away, or the docket is placed at the bottom of the pile.

Police Headquarters in Harare are interested in knowing of any type of corruption where this takes place.  So I strongly suggest when this happens to you, call them up and explain your situation.

Bulawayo is getting out of hand with all these pirate taxis’ and their atrocious driving.  So ensure you have been insured with a reputable insurance company.  Be very wary of ones that only offer 3rd party.  This will not help you in an accident, and you will be paying more than you realize.

HOMES and HOUSES

Home-owners policies are concerned with the damage to the structure of the home.

House-holders policies are concerned with the moveable possessions that are normally kept in the home.

Rates for these covers may vary significantly, so it pays to shop around with your list of reputable insurance agents.

With everyone having cameras on phones, tablets or digital, it is always advisable to take photos of your valuables, from jewellery to TV’s, refrigerator, clothing etc.  Keep these photos in a safe place and have a list with them stating significant marks and serial numbers.

HOME SECURITY

If you have not managed in the past year to revamp your security, now is the time to do it.  Check again with a reputable security company on their representative coming to advise you on what you should have as far as alarm systems, passives placed in strategic areas and advise him of what you want.  DO NOT be bullied into expensive equipment if you think it won’t help your home.  Start with the basics that you can add on at a later stage when you have more money.

Belong to a good reaction team.

Having the security company’s signs on the gate is a deterrent.

Here’s a check list for you to go through your house:

1.    Burglar bars are not rusted – replace if necessary or paint them.

2.    Ensure handles on windows are not loose and work correctly.

3.    Tiles have not been moved on the roof.

4.    Locks are properly lubricated and not rusty.

5.    Replace broken windows

6.    Electric gate motors are checked, oiled where necessary and battery is in good working order.

7.    Check the hinges on manual gates are not rusted.

8.    Out buildings – check their locks and windows.

9.    Remove overhanging branches from trees on both sides of your wall or fence.

10.  Remove small shrubs that criminals can hide behind near your gates.  Get a small child to hide behind them, if you can still see the child, remove the plant.

11.  Fix anywhere there is a hole in the fence or wall.

RECENT INCIDENTS

·         Over December there were a few robberies in Bulawayo city centre – headlines in the newspapers.

·         A domestic worker stole US$ 30 000 worth of jewellery and sold it for US$ 200!

·         Over Christmas period Famona area had a number of homes and garages broken into – some neighbours heard, but because so many houses have many families living in them, they thought it was a crowd coming in early in the morning!

·         This month one shop has had a robbery during the day.

·         Also this month, an elderly couple who had their fans on, did not hear 2 youths breaking in using a crowbar for possibly half an hour to wrench open their security door.  The youths walked around, grabbed various technical items from rooms and bags and unfortunately, Mrs Z who had been woken up by them switching on her bedroom light briefly, got up to see what was happening.  One of the criminals pushed her and she fractured her wrist.  The criminals ran out into a waiting vehicle.  The criminals had cut through the fence which was surrounded on both sides by bougainvilla!

POLICE ROADBLOCKS

With the increase in the number of police roadblocks, I for one am pleased.  I know it is frustrating when travelling on the roads to Harare and Vic Falls, some people have said they are replacing their brake pads more than usual for the continual stopping.  But, these road blocks have helped stop some illegal cars travelling on the roads, taking some of the shoddy vehicles off the road, catching diamond smugglers etc.

So I feel a “well done” must go out to the police.

Always be polite to the police – arrive at a roadblock with a severe look on your face, or grumpy, guaranteed they will harass you.  If you are invited to pay a bribe, take note of the faces, try and get their police numbers and report it to superior officers.

COUNSELLING AVAILABLE

There are still a number of people getting beaten up in home robberies or whilst walking on the roads, children getting traumatized from the break-in or violent attack.  Remember children suffer just as adults, and victims need to talk it out.  So if you are a concerned parent, please organize for the child to see me or someone who will listen.  Please do not hesitate to contact me for counseling or a shoulder to cry on.

Crime Awareness is into its 14th year of operation in Bulawayo and I am into my 17th year since being involved with the Anti Hijack Trust in Harare.  Years of experience and I have managed to guide a number of people around Zimbabwe into operating business-like affairs in conjunction with Neighbourhood Watch etc.

I do not charge for counseling victims – they are survivors in my eyes – so naturally I still need a great deal of donations and support from the communities that I hold dear to my heart.
