ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR JANUARY 2012

As a new year begins the hope is for a decrease in crime …. This sadly is not the case for the first month of 2012. There has been a lot of crime reported in most areas in and around Harare, from smash & grabs, muggings, house break ins, vehicle theft, and conmen. The Police have stepped up on road blocks in all areas and on all major roads leading into the capital city. This may have been a deterrent to the motorist, but not to the gangs working in the suburbs. In most cases it has been reported that the Police have acted swiftly and professionally, often with the assistance of Neighbourhood Watch Teams in the area. This is to be commended.
Several vehicles have been reported, a black Mercedes Benz, a white BMW both with no number plates cruising the suburbs with the intent of robbery. The gangs seem to be professional and work swiftly getting away with thousands of dollars worth of goods including cash. In some cases even with CCTV footage, these gangs have as yet not been apprehended. If you are offered items of value that you may think could have been stolen please contact your nearest Police Station, Items such as jewellery, this may have little value to the seller, but great value to the looser, and often the true value is unknown to the seller. Report any suspicious gatherings; you may stop an unfortunate robbery or intent of robbery. The public have just as an important role to play in the safety and security of our city.

School term has started, remember to be very aware of your surroundings when drop off/pick up zones with your children, safety is vital …. Report any unfamiliar vehicles or gatherings to either the nearest Police Station or the School Office so that the matter can be dealt with.

Areas that have been reported to the Trust for crime Msasa, Greendale, Mount Pleasant, Eastlea, Emerald Hill and Gun Hill .. but we know that there are other areas …. Let’s see if we can assist where possible in making our suburbs safe for all …. Let’s not have our beautiful Zimbabwe become known as an unsafe, and crime filled, we need the tourist industry to be on the increase not decline ………..
Let’s ALL fight this crime together - stay ALERT and SAFE !
