ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR JUNE 2014

ANTI-HIJACK UPDATE FOR JUNE 2014

June has seen a continuation of smash and grabs  … at the notorious sites of intersections and traffic lights, the Churchill Ave/ Second Street lights is still a prime ‘hit’ spot.  Please be very vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially whilst driving as its changes from twilight to dark …. It only takes seconds to hear that smash and crash of glass to find your valuables gone …. Do NOT leave anything on your seats be it back or the front ….  The tsortsies are just waiting to pounce and grab!  Do not let your guard down by looking into handbags etc. whilst waiting for the lights to change … these are just the moments they are waiting for, this change of concentration for a split second could be the down fall ….

If you happen to find a handbag, wallet, or case please contact the person concerned if a phone number is available or hand them into your nearest Police Station, to replace  necessary documents is time consuming and often difficult.

The heavy load shedding schedule which has recently been introduced has seen us powerless for many hours. This is when the security of a backup system is of utmost importance in any premises…. Please make sure that all alarm systems, remotes etc. are in good working order. Keep all gates firmly locked and be aware of who is at the entrance before allowing anyone to gain entry onto the property. Areas that reports of break ins have been received are Vainona, Borrowdale, Ruwa, Millton Park, Sunningdale, Greendale and CBD.

To ALL motorists, with the introduction of stiff power cuts often traffic lights are not working, let’s be more courteous; let’s not see road rage and the complete chaos created by bad driving and no rules of the road being adhered to.  This only causes confusion and that is when accidents occur, with a bad pile up of vehicles, causing long delays for ALL concerned.   It would seem sensible for ZESA to communicate with the ZRP Traffic Control on these cuts so that good control with traffic police directing operations can be put into place for these periods. Let’s see some foresight …. We have the same chaos every winter period. Maybe the intervention of the City Councillors would be beneficial?  Be community minded … time to all pull together.

Let’s ALL fight this crime together  - stay ALERT and SAFE !

JUNE ALREADY

Our wishes ……..

We all know that stimulation is key to keep minds healthy and active.  If you can, or know anyone who can spare a little time to come to the home and entertain our residents or give them  a little demonstration or even some art therapy - we would be truly grateful. Please feel free to contact us at any time with any ideas you may have.

Time flies when you are having fun and we sure have had many fun moments but also some very sad ones.  We continue to focus on showering our residents with love and laughter while also trying to keep them warm and cosy in these cold months.

Our committee together with our  staff  believe that compassion is the key to make kindness and good heartedness the rule of order.  We aim to understand the spirit and the soul of all our residents and meet their needs.  We endeavour to provide respect, dignity and a life worth living in these challenging times.

Guardian Angels

Our Guardian Angels continue to shower us with generosity and we would like to thank them all for their continued kindness – You all know who you are – Thank you so much, without you all we could not continue to provide our folk with a loving and secure environment that they call home.

.

To all those people who ask for nothing other than personal satisfaction of knowing they made a  difference in the lives of some needy persons, we say thank you so very much for your dedication and labour of love.

Out and About

In March the B.S. Leon had a fundraising evening at the Barnyard – This was a huge success and we thank everyone who supported us on the night.

The Zimbabwe Christian Motor Cycle  Association visited us at Easter where all of us were given chocolate eggs – Many of our “ brave” residents were taken on a ride on the motorcycles which they loved – The oldest resident who went for a ride was “ Nina “ who is almost 90 years old.

Our residents were invited to Sharon School where we were served a delicious tea and were treated to a school play to celebrate “ Shavuot “ – (The Feast of Weeks) – All the children brought to school fruit and vegetables and donated them to us – We enjoyed a delicious vegetable soup the next night.

Happenings around the Home

We are blessed to have a lovely woman “ Nomsa” who gives generously of her time every Sunday to  pamper our residents with pedicures and foot massage – This weekly event is hugely looked forward to and we would like to thank Nomsa for her kindness.

Thanks to Mr. Jose Dias, each room and our frail care section have been fitted with heaters and the winter months are now easier to cope with.

Staying in Touch

It’s never too late to say “ I Love you ” Today is the day - Don’t wait for the right time.  Moments escape never to return on this side of Eternity and now is the time -

If they haven’t said “ I Love you “  – Its up to you

We encourage you to please send letters or messages to your loved ones in the home, they really love to stay in touch, and we will ensure they receive them.  You may use either one of the following email addresses martine@zimbiz.net or bsleon@zimbiz.net.

Laughter is food for our soul

The Internet What’s that?

“C’mon Ma you have got to try it” I pleaded to my elderly Mother.

I don’t know how my Mother lasted this long without ever using the internet, but enough was enough! I thought.

“Ok” she said reluctantly settling down by the computer and slowly putting on her reading glasses “what do I do now?”

“Now I’m going to open the home page of Google”, I explained. “OK here it is! Now type in ANY question you want into the bar over here and you will find an answer to your question.” I confidently assured her.

My Mother looked at me warily, thought for a second, and slowly began to type,

How is Gertrude doing this morning ???

10 services you can now enjoy in Zimbabwe thanks to PayPal

PayPal’s opening up of its services to Zimbabwe this past week has created a lot of excitement in the market. Many entrepreneurs see this as a godsend and I can just see them smiling all the way FROM the bank (after going to deposit their funds to start transacting using the payment gateway). But there may be some of you who are wondering what all the excitement is about. Why is everyone (well at least those online) excited about being able to PAY other people and NOT SELL their goods and service? I penned an article yesterday of why I felt that PayPal wouldn’t be a hit just yet here in Zimbabwe and how local payment solutions were better poised to service the Zimbabwean market. Well, there are still sections of the populace that may want to know what they can pay with PayPal now that it has opened up. Let me first break down to how it works. As PayPal is a payment gateway, it accepts various payment providers through their system (an option that many suppliers would prefer), including VISA and MasterCard. If any website used PayPal to process their payments, even though you have a VISA (for example), because Zimbabwean cards were not recognised by PayPal your card would be rejected and essentially your transaction would fail. This created a stumbling block for many-an-entrepreneur that needed to buy services and products online. Well, PayPal has finally recognised that we exist and have been gracious enough to open their platform to us (someone give these guys a Bells). With this comes a host of opportunities, and I hope to list at least 10 services that you can now enjoy as a Zimbo.
  1. WhatsApp subscriptions: For those of you that have been having sleepless nights over how you can pay your WhatsApp subscription and are tired of downloading and using it for FREE, the day has finally come. WhatsApp have been lenient on us and continually extend our expiry date for their service every year. No, it is not because Econet and/or Telecel (or whatever mobile network you’re on) paid for you as some people believe! One of the challenges that the Facebook owned instant messaging app has is how to collect money from developing nations. The coming of PayPal is a step in getting you to pay that $1 per year. C’mon guys, rejoice with me!
  2. eBay: From the amount of comments and feedback from my last post on the issue, eBay should be a happy lot. It seems everyone was waiting for PayPal so that they can start buying stuff from the American website. Hokoyo ZimBay. If you didn’t know, PayPal is a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay (arguably the biggest consumer to consumer marketplace, a.k.a. classifieds) and now we can buy goods through their website. (Anybody do a transaction yet? Please advise of the logistics so that we all can start enjoying)
  3. Skype: If you need to communicate cost efficiently then Skype is your answer. Internet connection allowing you can stay in touch with friends and relatives all over the world with your Skype Credit. PayPal now affords us this opportunity.
  4. DropBox: For those of you that are always on the go and need to store information in the cloud, enter DropBox. The cloud storage service offers a limited amount of storage for FREE but for just $9.99 you can get access to 100GB extra!
  5. Fiverr: My love and flirtation with Fiverr dates back over two years, where I have been using it ever since. For just $5 you can get an app made, Facebook login plug-in developed, even hire a “fake girlfriend” to make that somebody on Facebook jealous. Now that we can make payments there are so many freelance services that we can get for less than the price of the lowest DStv package (hey, wait, just about anything is lower than that!)
  6. WordPress: For those of you who like to churn out websites on the fly and use WordPress for quick to market solutions, now you can buy your favourite templates easily. The world of themes and templates, plugins included are estimated to be a $25m industry, so believe me there is some value in them.
  7. GoDaddy: For those of you that are more interested in .com websites (I’d recommend .co.zw instead, get them from Name) he is one of the industry leaders that will aide you in getting online quickly.
  8. Udemy: if you haven’t visited Udemy, then what are you waiting for? This has got to be one of THE BEST learning resources online, though it might have a few FREE courses that will help you to further your career; the paid content is off the chain! (N.B. Econet offer this website along with over 50+ other FREE websites through their Econet Zero service, though I have been unable to access it). The courses that are available are widespread and very relevant to what is needed in today’s app market, e.g. Apple Swift Programming
  9. iTunes: For the iEnthusiasts (all your iDevices) here is an easier way for you to now buy your Apple iTunes Store products at cost. Say good bye to middlemen who we visited at certain stores locally and bought iTunes credit at a premium (I know, you can thank me later).
  10. Market Motive: I have saved the best for last. My passion is in Social Media Marketing and this is one of the world leaders when it comes to online learning. Teaching you topics such as SEO, PPC, Social Media and Content Marketing, you can get yourself a worldwide recognised certificate all from the comfort of your desktop…
If you are interested in more information on what services you can use with your PayPal account, be sure to check out their Store Directory. Do share in the comments below, if there is any service that you can now access through PayPal payments that makes your busy life so much easier.
