Further to our Road Traffic Offences update on 27 May, we
need to clarify when Class 2 licences are required:
The Road Traffic (Licensing of Drivers) Regulations, 1997
RGN No. 240 of 1977 Section 2 states ... In these regulations - "class
2", when used in relation to a motor vehicle, means a motor vehicle - (a)
exceeding two thousand three kilograms net mass: and .... (etc.)
However, when taking a driving test for a Class 2 licence,
the test vehicle must have a minimum net vehicle mass of 5,000kg.
So, in summary, operating a vehicle above 2,301kg NVM
requires a Class 2 licence, and a Class 4 below that.
Many thanks to the knowledgeable members of the transport
industry who contacted us with this clarification.
