Warren Hills

One of our readers was out at Warren Hills Cemetery this week and wrote the following:
I was at the cemetery this Thursday - the grass was not as bad as it was at Easter, it looked like they had burnt the grass in some sections to sort it out.
I think water is a problem - at one time when there was water, I thought residents from nearby were collecting water in their containers to take away with them . I regret to say I did not check if there was any water in the taps this time - I am so used to taking my own. There seems to be an ant and weed problem in some areas. Some graves are maintained but many are not.

From Mike Gardener

I went along to Mount Pleasant Swimming pool today to check it out for all you swimmers out there. The water is very clean , temperature was 20 Deg C and it is being managed by a very pleasant lady called Florah

KARIBA DAM: SAFETY

AUGUST 2009

SPECIAL ISSUE

KARIBA DAM: SAFETY

Summary of a talk given to the Zimbabwe History Society by Consultant Engineer, Terry Kabell, as part of Kariba's 50th Anniversary celebrations.

There have been many unfounded and scare-mongering rumours circulating about the safety or otherwise of Kariba Dam, especially given that, due to good rains in the past couple years, the waters of the lake have been the highest recorded for some time.

As a service to the community, The Zambezi Society has summarised a very interesting and reassuring talk recently given by consultant engineer, Terry Kabell on the safety of Kariba Dam.

Terry Kabell is a very experienced engineer who spent many years with Water Development in Rhodesia and then Zimbabwe. More recently he has worked throughout Africa as a consultant, and has been advising the Zambezi River Authority for some 12 years.

Here is a summary of Terry’s presentation:

Recent rumours about Kariba being overfull and in danger of collapse are nonsense
Terry began his talk by announcing that recent rumours about Lake Kariba being 110% full and in danger of collapse are nonsense. The Lake is currently 82% full (its highest this year being 83%in July 2009). Up to date information about levels and flows at Lake Kariba and elsewhere on the Zambezi River can be found on the Zambezi River Authority’s website at www.zaraho.org.zm – specifically on these links:
Lake Levels: http://www.zaraho.org.zm/lakelavel.html
River flows: http://www.zaraho.org.zm/flows.html

He affirmed that the dam is in no danger of imminent collapse. His presentation, based on a variety of sources include the Zimbabwean and Zambian power authorities, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) and a number of highly respected experts worldwide, was, he said, to dispel rumours and to assure people that Kariba Dam, throughout its 50 year history, has been regularly inspected for safety and thoroughly monitored both locally and by international consultants, who have found it to be in a very sound state.

Safety inspections & maintenance
Twice yearly inspections and surveys are carried out on Kariba Dam and every 5 years a special safety inspection is undertaken with experts from French and UK engineering companies who were involved in the orginal design. Other ad hoc inspections are carried out from time to time for specific reasons when required (e.g. the “plunge pool” which has been scoured out of the rock by the water flowing out of the floodgates). Records and archives for the dam dating back to its construction have been rigorously kept by these companies and there is no cause whatsoever for alarm.

Continuous annual maintenance is carried out on the dam, especially on mechanical parts such as the spill gates and stop locks.

There are literally hundreds of instruments in the wall which measure stress, any changes or movement in the wall, water pressure, drainage etc. These are continually inspected, have survived the past 50 years remarkably intact and are still functioning well. (For example, of the 263 original strain meters buried in the concrete of the dam to measure stress in three dimensions, 214 are still operating perfectly).

In 1997, the World Bank commissioned a special investigation of Kariba Dam prior to giving the go-ahead for the construction of the North Bank (Zambian) power station. A very thorough and extremely sophisticated computer-based analysis was carried out by international experts and Kariba was given a clean bill of health and declared quite safe!

Lake storage levels
The total catchment area of Lake Kariba covers some 663 000 sq kms. The biggest inflows of water occur during March/April/May at the end of the rainy season. Flows from the upper catchment in Angola/Zambia usually reach the lake later than those from the lower catchment area in Zambia/Zimbabwe because of the “sponge” effect of the Barotseland Floodplains in western Zambia which hold rainwater and release it slowly over a period of weeks. The greatest danger of massive floods is if both catchment area flows arrive in the lake at the same time.

The dam’s usual spill rate per floodgate is 1500 cubic metres per second (cumecs). At capacity each gate spills 9000 cumecs. However, the dam was constructed to withstand much greater flows than this… indeed at the height of the 1956 great flood, 16 000 cumecs were recorded! Overtopping of the dam itself, although catastrophic for downstream communities and damaging to the electrics inside the wall, would not necessarily result in collapse of the dam.

The Zambezi River Authority prefers to control the water-level to a maximum operating level of 1 metre below the roadway on top of the wall - to prevent overtopping and electrical damage. Although the dam has 6 floodgates, they prefer, for various reasons to do with stress levels and potential undercutting, to restrict the spill to 3 open floodgates. Lake levels are carefully calculated with the potential for rainy-season floods in mind, and water is deliberately drawn down from the lake from October each year in order to make sure there is enough storage capacity to cope with a big flood. Telemetry stations in the upper Zambezi catchment areas provide ZRA staff with prior warnings of a potential flood situation. However, nowadays, there is less need for dam spillage than there used to be because of increasing power generation requirements.

An operational mistake in 1997/8 resulted in a potentially dangerous situation because ZRA did not lower the lake level from October as usual. Fortunately the floods that rainy season were not huge and they were able to get away with it.

Challenges
1. The south bank of the Kariba Gorge downstream of the dam has been a problem from the time the dam was built. Although the wall is deeply imbedded into the deep-down solid natural rock of the hillside and has been heavily reinforced by buttresses, the top 30 metres of the hillside is composed of a rock which is weak and has tended to slip– a factor which was exacerbated when the hillside was saturated by rain or spray from the open floodgates. This was a potentially dangerous situation as land slippage could have blocked the dam’s underground tunnels. Various measures have been taken since 1978 to stabilize the bank and prevent slip, including the construction of drainage channels. These have been successful. Careful monitoring continues, but it appears that the bank is no longer a danger.

2. Spillway and stop beams – there is mechanical and electrical equipment involved with these, which can give trouble if not properly maintained. The dam was originally designed with just 4 spillway gates each approx. 9 sq m in size. Two more were added after the big floods of 1956 during construction of the dam. Regular testing is carried out on the gates and the hoist mechanism which lifts and closes them. Many people do not realize that the dam wall is sealed only on the downstream side, with the interior being water-filled. The presence of water can cause problems with mechanical and electrical parts and deposits on the concrete surrounding the gates sometimes needs to be removed in order for the mechanism to slide correctly. There is also a recent issue of concrete swelling (see below) which requires attention if it threatens to impede the gate mechanisms. In 1998 a complete refurbishment of the dam’s electrics was undertaken, with wire cables being replaced and a stand-by generator provided in case of power failure.

3. Concrete swelling
In the 1980s it was discovered that a chemical interaction between concrete and cement in wet conditions can result in slow, but irreversible “swelling” of the concrete used in dam building. Tests were carried out on samples of concrete from Kariba and it was discovered that the dam was indeed swelling at a small, but noticeable rate. Extra instrumentation was installed and it has been discovered that the crest of the dam is 80mm higher today than when it was first built! Arch dams like Kariba are naturally a little flexible, and it has been noticed that when the lake levels are low, the dam moves up to 50mm upstream and then back downstream again when it fills! Furthermore, the dam now tilts slightly (about 10mm) off the vertical in an upstream direction.

One of the problems associated with this is that it can affect the spillgates, stoplocks and moveable parts. These have to be checked regularly and maintenance carried out (e.g. chipping away of concrete) to ensure that they move freely.

4. Seismic Activity (earthquakes)
A branch of Africa’s famous Rift pattern falls diagonally across the Kariba zone – so the area has some susceptibility to seismic activity. Since Lake Kariba began filling behind the dam in 1958, many seismic events have been recorded (no less than 1700 between 1959 and 1999). The biggest ones were early on, as 200 billion tons of extra load was pressed down onto the Earth by the filling waters of the lake. However, most have been very small. Since 1999 there appears to have been much less action

In 2001, a study of the Kariba area to check seismicity was undertaken by experts. Four separate seismograph stations were erected at a distance of some 20 kms away from the dam to map seismic activity, which appears to have been decreasing in recent years. No damage due to seismic activity was seen, even on the problematic South Bank.

5. The “plunge pool” (below the floodgates)
This big hole scoured into the rock downstream of the dam wall by water released from the floodgates was forseen by the designers of the wall. Indeed, the floodgates were designed in such as way as to throw the jet of water out so that the resulting “scour” hole would not endanger the foundations of the dam.

In the first 20 years of the dam’s history, there was considerable spillage through the floodgates, which which led to the creation of the pool. Between 1982 and 2000, the floodgates were not used, due to low lake levels. Since 2000, the gates have been used very little because of power generation on both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides of the river.

Currently, engineers are concerned that the plunge pool should not be allowed to scour any deeper and that any cut-back or erosion upstream should be avoided, as this would undermine the foundations of the dam. The pool has been the subject of number inspections (some with divers) and surveys (the latest in 2001) and the profile of the pool has been fully mapped. Repairs to soft spots have been undertaken using underwater concrete. If the dam is allowed to spill in the next year, the subsequent effects on the plunge pool will be checked and restoration work will be undertaken.

6. Concrete apron at the foot of the dam
In the last 5-yearly inspection of the dam (in 2005), the concrete apron at the foot of the dam wall was raised as a point for investigation. This apron was designed to protect the dam from undercutting by any small spillage or dribbling (as opposed to full flood jets emanating from the spill gates). It is now underwater because of tailwater coming from the power generating turbines. Divers investigating its condition had previously reported that it was breaking up and some repairs with underwater concrete had been undertaken. However, these had not bonded well with the original concrete, and it was decided to undertake an investigation by drying it out and inspecting. In April 2007, over the Easter weekend, both power stations were shut down for 8 hours and the water from the bottom of the dam was removed to reveal the concrete apron. Most of the secondary concrete repairs had broken and washed away, but the original concrete, laid in 1956 was found to be in good condition after 50 years! (What the divers had seen had been the broken up remnants of the original coffer dam – nothing to do with the original apron itself!).

7. Reinforcing steel within the dam
A further concern raised by the 2005 inspection was the condition of the steel plates imbedded in the wall. Although the dam looks like solid concrete, the area around the floodgates is in fact largely solid steel plates covered over with a layer of concrete. Because of the wet conditions prevailing within the wall, there was a chance of corrosion which needed to be investigated. Inspection windows were cut into the concrete to expose the steel plates and reinforcing bars. In all cases, the steel was found to be in perfect condition! The only problem that faced the investigating teams was to ensure that the concrete used to close up the inspection windows was made to a similar strength as that used originally in 1956!

The examples above were given to show the extent to which the authorities ensure that maintenance and corrective measures are undertaken to protect the dam and ensure its safety.

Summary of possible threats
- Ageing and corrosion. There are many examples of dams which have existed for hundreds of years. The evidence from inspections so far indicate that Kariba dam is remarkably free of corrosion and is ageing extremely well
- Overtopping. If this were to occur, it would cause damage and chaos downstream, but it would not necessarily cause the dam to collapse
- Undermining of the foundations. This is a real threat, but, as outlined above, regular inspections and protective measures and maintenance ensure that the likelihood of this happening is reduced.
- Swelling of concrete. This is being carefully monitored and corrective measures taken.
- Earthquake. A very big earthquake could affect the dam. But it has been designed to withstand such an event. Most of the seismic events recorded have been small and the indications are that activity has decreased in recent years.

Funding and personnel
The costs of maintaining the dam wall are born by the governments of Zimbabwe and Zambia through the Zambezi River Authority. There are challenges. But some 5 years ago, because of the declining economic situation in Zimbabwe, the Authority was authorized to generate its own funds by charging the National power authorities in foreign currency for use of the water passing through their turbines for the production of electricity. This has enabled the costs of maintenance to be covered without being adversely affected by the decline of the Zimbabwe dollar.

The safety of Kariba dam ultimately depends on people. In the 2005 report on Kariba Dam, the expert consultants wrote this paragraph about the numerous staff responsible for the dam:
“In the consultants’ very wide experience of other dams in many countries, it is rare to find such an experienced, stable, dedicated, friendly and unified team”.

The Zambezi Society has compiled this summary for wide dissemination so that such interesting and reassuring information can be in the public domain. We would like to thank Terry Kabell and salute him and the dedicated staff who work to keep Kariba dam safe and generating our power!

WHAT TO DO WHEN A LOVED ONE DIES in Zimbabwe

There will always be factors surrounding the death of a loved one that will dictate how a family must respond. These will include, but are not limited to, the cause, location and time of death. The following items will mention the various locations where death may occur and the necessary steps to be taken.
What Happens When A Death Occurs At Home?
Who should be contacted?
The attending Doctor (GP) or Physician must be contacted regardless of the circumstances. The police should be contacted only when a sudden, unexpected or accidental death occurs.
A Funeral Director should be contacted. His /her presence would help to relieve the family of the problems and details surrounding a death at home.
A member of the Clergy should be contacted, depending on one's personal beliefs or church affiliations.
After the death is pronounced, the Doctor. or physician will authorise the transfer of the late by the Funeral Director, either to the hospital for an autopsy, or to the funeral home.
Legally, the service of a Pathologist is required under the following circumstances:
when an individual has not been under the recent and regular care of a physician (more than 2 months); when accidental death occurs;
when death results from something other than natural causes.
It is the legal decision of the Pathologist to request a post-mortem examination, the family cannot object to this request. However, a physician may request an autopsy; the family's consent is required in this circumstance.
While Travelling?
Need to report to nearest Hospital or Police Station and Family Doctor. Police will fill out all necessary documents and, if post mortem is not required, the Doctor will sign the reverse of the Police report.Should the death of a loved one occur while that person is travelling, a family may choose from the following alternatives:
- Contact a representative from the funeral home in the community in which the person resides. This is generally recommended, as the Funeral Director will make the necessary arrangements to transport the remains back home. All funeral arrangements could then be made, on a personal basis, with the local funeral home.
- Contact a representative from a funeral home in the location where death occurs. Similar transport arrangements would then be made by this funeral home to ensure the remains are transferred to a funeral home in the community in which the person resides.
The above noted alternatives assume that a traditional funeral service would be chosen.
Another option would be the cremation of the late, at the place of death, with the cremated remains interred or scattered at a later date. Should the late be transported home, some preparation and embalming will be necessary to meet the carrier's requirements. The carrier will accept a “shipping container” designed for this purpose or the late may be transported in a casket.
Regardless of the country where death occurs, a local Funeral Director would be familiar with, or could readily access, the rules and regulations associated with the transportation of the deceased. His/her services in these circumstances would be of great benefit.
In A Resident Care Facility?
(e.g. Athol Evans Hospital, B.S. Leon Hospital, Dandaro Clinic, Dorothy Duncan Centre)
Many of the residents in these facilities leave specific instructions with the Administrator, or Superintendent, as to whom they should contact in the event of their death. These instructions should include the name of the funeral home of choice. The Funeral Director would then be contacted and, if an autopsy is not required, the late would be transferred immediately to the funeral home, as mortuary facilities do not usually exist in a resident care facility. Funeral arrangements can then be made by family members, or resident staff, following instructions left by the deceased.
In a Hospital?
The procedure followed when death occurs in a Hospital is similar to that of a resident care facility. However the transfer of the late to the funeral home would be more flexible as most hospitals have mortuary facilities. If a hospital does not have mortuary facilities the funeral parlour can be contacted once the doctor has certified death.
Whatever the circumstances surrounding the death of a loved one, the advice, counselling and guidance of a Funeral Director at this emotional time should prove invaluable. It is important for the relatives to leave instructions with the matron or sister in charge as to the funeral parlour of their choice.

Zimbabwe Farm Updates

Zanu PF Youths Terrorising White Farmers

http://www.radiovop.com/

Gwanda, August 24 2009- Zanu (PF) youths and war veterans here are allegedly harassing few remaining white safari operators in Matabeleland South, accusing them of not attending Zanu (PF) party meetings and demanding to know where they are sourcing capital for their farming projects.

"We have problems with these youths and war veterans, some of them were allocated conservancies in the area. It seems they are not happy with our progress. It seems these people are not happy because wildlife is deserting their farms because of poaching and they are now seeking refuge in our farms where we are trying to protect them from poaching and veldfires"

said one of the farmers Mark Davis.

Davis, who is running a conservancy along the Gwanda-Beitbridge highway, said a group of suspected Zanu (PF) youths driving a Mazda Nissan hard body visited his farm last week and demanded to know his source of his funding and accused him of not attending Zanu (PF) meetings in the area.

The culprits also accused Davis of failing to donate a kudu for the Heroes day celebrations.

Another farmer, Douglas Houge, who also runs a thriving safari in West Nicholson also complained about the behavior of the youths and war veterans in the area.

"All my workers last week were forced to attend a Zanu (PF) meeting in the area. During the meeting threats to take over my farm and that of Davis were issued .During the meeting we were accused of getting funds from the British and Americans while neglecting new farmers Now the question is where do they expect us to get money to assist them when we are also struggling?" said Houge.

Houge accused new farmers in the area of starting veld fires in a bid to destroy their infrastructures.

"We are putting all our workers on stand-by for fire outbreaks all the time. There have been several attempts to sabotage our properties. If things continue like this we might be forced to seek redress from the courts because we have offer letters from the relevant ministry,' added Houge

Farm Situation

Seed Project Threatened as Farm is Seized

http://www.thezimbabwestandard.com

BY SANDRA MANDIZVIDZA

Saturday, 22 August 2009 19:17

A MASHONALAND East farmer who has been producing 520 tonnes of maize seed for Pannar Seeds annually is on the verge of losing his farm to a Zanu PF supporter as disturbances on commercial farms continue unabated.

Dennis Lapham has been told to leave part of his Devonia Farm - about 40km along the Harare-Murehwa road - including the farm house by Herbert Shumbamhini, who first invaded the property in March.

The saga has drawn in the Minister of Agriculture, Senator Herbert Murerwa, whom Shumbamhini claims signed his offer letter. When pressed by The Standard, Shumbamhini produced a photocopy. There was no way of immediately verifying its authenticity.

Lapham's lawyers say Murerwa has no authority to issue new offer letters.

The 900-hectare farm is used by Pannar, a South African company as a seed research centre.

Seed for crops such as maize, sorghum, soya, barley, wheat and sugar beans is tested at the farm. Lapham also grows barley for Delta Beverages.

Shumbamhini, who openly admitted his allegiance to Zanu PF, has already built a two-bedroomed house at the farm and is growing cabbages and maize.

Lapham said the "intruder" usually patrolled the farm brandishing a gun.
Shumbamhini on Thursday also switched off electricity to the Lapham's farm house in a bid to drive them off.

"He has threatened my workers not to come to work and he has taken a block of houses where some of my workers have been staying," Lapham said.

The two had a meeting in April where they reached an oral "agreement"
that Lapham would vacate his house by August 20.

However on Thursday, Lapham was advised by his lawyers Gollop & Blank not to leave the property since Shumbamhini did not have an eviction order.

A copy of the letter, which was copied to Murerwa by the lawyers
reads: "The Agriculture Land Settlement Act does not empower or authorise the minister to unilaterally issue an offer letter to a third party.

"The Act specifically empowers the agriculture land resettlement board to receive application from applicant requesting use of state land that has been competently acquired."

The lawyers also argue that neither Pannar's representatives nor Lapham himself had received any valid instruction to leave the farm.

But Shumbamhini has denied trying to force Lapham to leave the farm saying he only wanted part of the property including the farm house.

"I am just taking a piece of land which was given to me," he said. "It's unfortunate that his house falls under my land but what I just want is my land and he should leave. After all he has 560 hectares and I have 353 hectares."

He denied that he was using violence saying he is a member of the Johane Masowe apostolic sect.

"The problem with these white people is that when they are told to leave they will run to papers saying there is a farm invasion yet there is nothing like that. I am just taking what belongs to me," Shumbamhini claimed.

Pannar managing director Themba Nkatazo said the chaos at the farm would affect seed production in the country but his company's hands were tied.

"We were given that farm by the government and we have been working with Lapham for the past 10 years," he said. "We were just told that someone is going to take over part of the farm and there is nothing we can do about it. This will likely affect the production of seeds because we do not know whether the person who is going to take over is going to be co-operative or not."

Lapham says he has had no help from the police.

Murerwa was not immediately available for comment.

Dearest Family & Friends in Zimbabwe

It is with great sadness we let you know that Sheena Collier, our wonderful mother passed away on Friday 14 August at 7.45pm.

Please forgive our late notice and if you have already heard our terrible news, we hope you will understand our shock and grief at her sudden death.

Although we were so very proud of her phenomenal fight against lymphoma cancer, on Wednesday she woke up in terrible pain. She was taken to her doctor where she was admitted and it was discovered the cancer was back. Mum was "comfortable" on Friday but confused and drowsy and she slipped away peacefully. Father John saw Mum on Thursday night and gave her last rites.

We have planned a full requiem mass for her here in Bloemfontein on Thursday 20 August at 2pm. She was the most remarkable woman, mother, wife and friend who touched so many lives and left an indelible imprint which will stay with us all forever. We know how special all of you were to Sheena and how much your friendship and prayers meant to her.

May God bless you all & keep you safe
Much love to everyone

Fake money

Its not only the $50 notes that are fake. There seems to be a syndicate of fake money peddlers on the market. people should look out for fake $10 notes also. popular fake notes are $50 and $10 notes especially from street vendors. Kindly check your change from airtime vendors or news paper vendors.

We have noticed this from vendors who come and hoard airtime from dealers that the rate of fake notes of the above denominations is on the increase. We advice that if you are not well versed with security features buy from reputable shops and get your change tested by their machines for validity.

those who buy from vendors buy from vendors that you are used to, not just any new face on the road.

INGWERATI FARM 2ND JAMBANJA

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INGWERATI FARM 2ND JAMBANJA HIGH COURT ORDER 5075/08 24/08/2008

15/7/2009 Charles Nyachowa, ID 70/067/169Q, of 29 Manyonga Drive,
Glen Lorne (011-402 150) arrived with three people. Lands Officer Tigere, Ministry of Lands, Chinhoyi. Told Moses, our Farm Manager, that they were going to come back with Offer letter.

18/07/2009 Charles Nyachowa plus five people parked outside near
ramp, crept through fence, walked around houses.

19/07/2009 Charles Nyachowa plus two people parked outside near
ramp, crept through fence, walked around. High Court Order says he is forbidden on Ingwerati Farm, Case Number HC 5075/08 24/08/2008.

20/07/2009 Phoned Sheriff Gate (0912-295 144) who evicted Charles
Nyachowa on 12/9/2008. He took me to ZRP Norton. We saw Insp Ndebele
0912-735 980 and Sgt Tarangarawa who was at eviction. He advised me to come the next day and report to the Member In Charge, Mhandy (0912-749 427), who I had smsed and told that Nyachowa was on the Farm.

21/07/2009 9am Chief Insp Mhandy called Sgt Chirinda (0912-918 546)
who went through all CR and phoned Lands Officer Chinhoyi, Tigere Ministry of Lands Chinhoyi 067-21763 (0912-585 660).

29/08/2008 Gazetted Ingwerati Spitzop 12+14 108B-2008 Hec 348-68
Hec. Last offer letter 28/08/2008. Whole Ingwerati 351.00 hec. He
said he had not left offer letter, only spoken to Manager Moses. He said we are to vacate by 31/08/2009.

21/07/2009 Sgt Chirinda and Chief Insp Mhandy advised me to go to
the DA in Murombedzi. DA L M Bakare Room 41. He phoned Lands Officer Tigere. He spoke to Lands Officer Chikomba. We went to Chinhoyi as advised but he had a meeting with Governor Chidarikire at 3pm and wanted us to wait until 4.30 to see him which we could not do as that was too late for the two hour drive home. Sent him an sms (0912-585 660) to cancel and phoned his Secretary, Daphne 067-21763.

22/07/2009 Reported back to Sheriff Gate. He took me to Public
Prosecutor Munyoro 062-2579 (0912-911 134) to find out the verdict of the court cases.

CR18/10/08 This case was CR37/08/08. Gilbert Pengo Charles Nyachowa
threatened to kill him with a gun at his head if he stopped him from breaking into my house with a locksmith which he did on 04/08/2008 and stayed in the house until 12/09/2008 with ten guards. Court date 25/03/2009.

CR128/08/08 Breaking and entering and abuse of my personal household
possessions, theft to the value of $1850. Court cases 12/12/2008, 16/02/2008, 24/03/2009 and 17/04/2009.

CR145/8/08 Assault of Kennith Vaughan Sherriffs. Charles Nyachowa
paid Admission of Guilt fine at ZRP Norton.

22/07/2009 Public Prosecutor Munyoro and Deputy Sheriff came and
looked at abuse to stove and microwave. The staff, who have the beds and mattresses, said that were disgusting and they washed and cleaned them and are using. I was told to go and see Insp Ndebele with the list of malicious damage to my property after the Public Prosecutor phoned him.
US$4200.

CR39/9/08 Paul Nyachowa, brother of Charles, whom he works for and
was in my house with the guards, drove into our truck twice, hitting it with Charles Nyachowa's green tractor twice, which has not been repaired. This case has now been transferred from ZRP Norton to Marimba 08/09/2008, reference number 219/10/08. Quote US $1,575. 2/12/2008 Inv 6884.

23/07/2009 4:30pm Charles Nyachowa and two vehicles with 8 men took
hacksaws and cut the lock to the main gate. This is the fifth lock he has cut to enter the Farm (Ingwerati). At the main house, has broken into the security gates at the front of the main house. Phoned ZRP Norton, Sgt Chirinda 0912-918 546, Insp Ndebele 0912-735 980, Sgt Tarangarawa 023-265 208 and Sheriff Gate 0912-295 144. The Guard Rhamosi was told by Charles Nyachowa that he will kill him if he closes the gate.

23/07/2009 Charles Nyachowa stole ½ tonne of gum wood from the
Manager's house and took it to the main house. His vehicle number, a green Nissan AAO 1706.

24/07/2009 We went with the Sheriff and Officers Nzombo and Chirinda
to Ingwerati. Nyachowa and his brother Paul were looking at the borehole opposite the manager's house. The Sheriff advised him that he was going to issue him with CIV29A Notice of Removal. Nyachowa went bezerk and said that all high court orders only last 90 days and that the State owns the land and he has been given Ingwerati. The Sheriff said the High Court ruling was valid until it is revoked by the High Court with a new offer letter. The offer letter dated 2/08/2008 that Nyachowa gave the two policeman, the Sheriff said was the same one that was thrown out in the High Court as false. The policemen said that they thought the Sheriff was wrong and Nyachowa's letter was valid. Charles Nyachowa shouted and screamed and said that he is going to get Bob and he is going to get 20% of Boheke and threatened the Sheriff. He pointed at myself and said he knew where I lived at Northfields.

The Dispol, Chief Superindent Makunike said the policeman had made a mistake and the Sheriff was correct. We then obtained a Bond of Indemnity (CIV41A) from Coghlan Welsh & Guest to allow the Messenger of the Court to act on our behalf.

At 4.30, the Sheriff went back to Ingwerati with the CIV29A Notice of Removal and issued it to Nyachowa who said there would be war and he would be killed if he came on Monday. The Sheriff had three people as witnesses who heard these threats.

25/07/2009 Charles Nyachowa took another ½ tonne of gum wood from
the Manager's house which he was seen leaving the farm with.

25/07/2009 Charles Nyachowa cut the electric boundary fence with the
assistance of three of his men to make a new entrance to the main house to avoid going past the guards.

26/07/2009 Charles Nyachowa maintained his presence on the farm with
other visitors on and off throughout the day.

27/07/2009 The Sheriff sent me to the Norton Police to pick up five
details to go with him for protection during the eviction. The Member In Charge, Mhandy 0912-749 427, called Nzombo and Chirinda, and they agreed that they would not give the Sheriff back-up. The ZRP told me that Mr Nyachowa had gone to see the Secretary of Justice, Mr Mangota.

The Dispol Inspector, Makunike 0912-840 653 and 0913-426 074, told them that this was not correct but could not get them to comply with their duties.

The Sheriff came to town and went to the Police Headquarters and they assured him that he would get back-up, however, when he returned the backup was not forthcoming. The Sheriff has his truck with ten officials to help him with the eviction. He then proceeded in his car to Ingwerati and told Paul Nyachowa, who was in the main house, that he would be back on Tuesday to evict him.

28/07/2009 The Sheriff returned to Mhandy, ZRP Norton and was
refused the police details to back him as they said they have a docket for us for over staying at the farm. The Sheriff was waiting for the Master of the High Court to issue a directive to the police to assist.

This morning, our Dairy Manager, Moses, contacted us to say that Charles Nyachowa had gone into the Dairy and told him he was to stop milking and move the cows on Wednesday and also that he was going to be welding the gate so that we would not have entry and that his men would be running the farm. He broke the padlock into the pack shed and replaced it with his own.

28/07/2009 The herd of 89 pedigree Holstein cattle cannot just be
moved as there is silage for four months and they are fed two and half
tons twice a day with our maize crop that was 10 tons. Three quarters
of this farm is hill and cannot carry many cattle. Charles Nyachowe told Moses that he would be bringing his cattle on Sunday 2nd August.

29/07/2009 Cows milked. Charles Nyachowe demanded keys for the
pivot from Moses. No rye grass pasture planted, no cabbages, potatoes or onions due to his threats. Went to David Dhumbura who was going to get an Emergency Contempt of Court against ZRP Norton and Charles Nyachowe.
The Sheriff got no reply from the High Court Magistrate.

Mrs Charle, who always got a donation to feed the children from Ingwerati, went to Moses for a donation. She was shocked that the Farm was being seized and advised us to go to see Madziwo 023-725 462 and Cheivutenda (0913-491 242), 314 Sheptra House, 3rd Floor, 94 Cameron Street. Made an appointment for 4pm that I was unable to keep. ZIMARATT (Zimbabwe Mining Agricultural & Residential & Tourism Trust). (We are going to give a male calf which she will collect later).

30/07/2009 Went to CFU Mike Clarke who suggested we go to Jomek
Thabani Mpofu 0912-288 027, 12 Bath Road. He was going to check Offer Letters. Phoned 8am to bring Sheriff. Sheriff Gate and Thabani Mpofu went straight to the top of PGHQ. We were told to go back to ZRP Norton to get assistance and back up. ZRP Norton said they would not provide backup. Member in Charge not there and Dispol too busy. The Sheriff left a letter stating Eviction 11am, Friday 31st.

(CFU - Mike Clarke mashc@cfuzim.org / 04-2917806).

30/07/2009 Cows milked. Charles Nyachowe told Moses to stop milking
as he is bringing his cattle to the Farm on Sunday.

The Sheriff dropped his papers at the Magistrate's High Court.

CFU suggested going to ZNSPCA which is the best thing we did.

ZNSPCA - Glynis Vaughan, Chief Inspector

ZNSPCA - George Mafundu.

Ingwerati 5pm. Went to main house with Moses. They were told the Cattle have nothing to with the land question and if they do anything to these animals, ie, stop feeding or milking, they will be arrested. The ZNSPCA representative indicated that the cattle were too thin. No rye grass planted for cattle due to Charles Nyachowe interference. Paul Nyachowe living in main house with Guards to tell his brother Charles. ZNSPCA to get a report twice a day to see if the livestock are being fed and milked. ZNSPCA wonderful - 100% back up and strength. Moses much happier with their backing. Report is made twice a day that dairy cows fed and milked. Went to Ingwerati and filled tractor with diesel. The Sheriff went back to ZRP Norton after his auction. Was refused assistance to evict Nyachowe. Nyachowe had not slept at the farm that night but left his men in the house and brother Paul. The Sheriff was told that they will only go if our lawyer filed Contempt of Court papers. We were told by Thabani Mpofu to contact Chinhoyi Assistant Commissioner, Nyakutsikwa 067-29009. Still no reaction from ZRP Norton.

David Dhumbura had been to High Court to get contempt but Mr Alex Masterson told him to wait until his return.

2/8/2009 Milked cows and sent milk to Nestle. Mr Madziwo, 314,
3rd Floor Shepton House, 94 Cameron Street met me at OK Marimba with Moses and Nomore. Told me his Association ZIMARTT (Zimbabwe Mining Agricultural and Residential & Tourism Trust) helped Analinda Dairy Farms. He said to come to the office and see his superior Chirivutenda at 2pm on Monday 3rd August 2009. Amalinda advised us to wait for Bob's return.

Susan Hawthorne, sister of Jan Stuart, phoned me and told me that Dave and Jan Stuart received report on Jagg in Australia. (Don Stuart murdered on 26 November 2005 and confirm Charles Nyachowe was the person who was terrorizing the whole family at the time of Don Stuart's murder. The staff who worked on Ingwerati with Don Stuart keep telling me this is the main who kept coming to the Farm and giving Don and son Dave a very hard time).

3/8/2009 CFU asked me to contact Lovemore Chidemge (0912-382
852), JOMIC (Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee comprising ZANU PF, MCD-T, MDC), 134 King George Avenue. They want to go to Ingwerati to see the invasion and will follow us in their car. From there they will see Ken Bartholomew at Selous. We agreed to meet at 8am on the 6th of August.

4/8/2009 Went and collected PP Manyoro at Katama. Went to
courtroom, gave him four empty files. He went through the case for the 5th, it was a balls up, we had to go to ZRP, got Constable Mabwe (0913-655298), to re-do the docket for court and add on my Malicious Damage claim, the previous one being for the locks. The PP said he must come back with us to HQ and he looked at the stove, microwave, kettle, pillows, curtains, knife, dish and six mattresses given to staff. I gave him three copies of the list of items stolen.

5/8/2009 Attended court case re Malice Damages and theft. Mark
from JAG accompanied me. Nyachowe said it was all lies and wanted a lawyer. Remanded to 19th of August.

6/8/2009 Took copies of relevant papers for JOMIC, they said
there are no invasions. They came with us to the farm and looked at the dairy. They went to the main house and told them that Nyachowe has to come and see them at JOMIC. We went to HQ and we brought the Sheriff and they all talked. The PP arrived and showed me how I must do my papers and that he had heard that Nyachowe had had things attached in town because he hadn't paid.

8/8/2009 I got a phone call and told they wanted to get into the
yard next to the Manager's house and wanted to put a Maputi mill and a grinding mill in the shed there and connect it to our ZESA. They cut the fence at the back of the house and walked all around and left about 9/10 am.

12/8/2009 Went to ZRP to report theft and malicious damage to
Deputy Inspector Ndebele and they wouldn't accept my report, they wanted it from the eye witnesses. Constables Nyandoro and Kuseri went in the truck with Peter Driver and interviewed relevant witnesses and Nyachowe and his men admitted to theft of wood and damage to fencing and locks. They went back to police station in their vehicle. I went to PP Manyoro and gave him the analysis of the items stolen.

14/8/2009 Moyra was advised that the farm was gazetted on
29.8.2008 and the onus was on us to have read it. That gave 45 days to wind up and 45 days to vacate the farm. Tegere has said we have until the 31st of August. We can take the dairy herd but not the machinery.
Apparently ZTV carried a story that Nyachowe was going to be growing cabbages for export on the farm. Moyra to appear in court on Monday 17th August and again on the 19th. The PP advised Moyra that Paul Nyachowe has now said that it was accidental and not on purpose that he damaged the truck

15/8/09 300m electric boundary fence stolen. Ingwerati
watchmen threatened not to patrol by Nyachowe's men.

16/8/09 Theft of 600m electric boundary fence (RRB number
0636486, Constable Gumbo). Breaking & entering of dam pivot transformer house and theft of MCB switches and V-380 electric motor serial number
DA90006 (15-20 HP / 32.7 amps) - RRB No. 0636487 .Investigating officers cst Gumbo & cst Damba attended the scene to witness the electric motor of the the management company that was on lease hire in the accussed vehicle. While in the presence of the ZRP they continued striping out the electrical switch gear. They were warned but left to continue!?

18/8/09 The management company removed all dairy cattle &
dairy equipment on lease hire to relocate farming operations due to police not enforcing the High Court Order & allowing the criminal theft of movable equipment on lease hire.

19/08/09 At 11.25pm the accusseds brother Paul Nyachowe with
Price Chizhowe In a Green Nissan Hard body twin cab reg #.AAD1725, & Green cruiser type car & 4 police details from ZRP Dzivarsekwa

Arrived on the farm and arrested 4 workers of the management company on the accusation that they had stolen Mr Nyachowes property, we presume they were claiming ownership of the movable equipment belonging to the management company on lease hire that war removed the previous day along with the dairy cattle & inputs!. The workers were not even given the chance to show a copy of the High Court Order that they had to prove that the police & the Nyachowes & co were all in contempt of court at that moment.?? The 4 employees were locked away with no shoes & jackets until 4 Hrs latter when due to the presentation of the high court order & diligent intervention of an ass insp Moyo were latter released to return in the morning.

Green Day

Dear Fellow Harare Dwellers,

Has anyone noticed how filthy Harare is becoming? I am sure we all have. Has anyone noticed that noone really cares anymore? I have. I was shocked recently to drive to New Marlborough (Red Roofs) and see piles and piles of garbage lining the road. The situation is the same here in Mt Pleasant, along Bargate where we not only have that vile smell of raw sewage but also a huge dumping problem. I am sure things are worse in other parts of the city. Has anyone noticed the pavement vendors along Robert Mugabe near Eastgate? Why is all this going unchecked? Why is no one concerned?

Lets do something. Zimbabweans are known for their cleanliness. We had the Sunshine City once and we can restore it. The city council has the highest paid workers in the country. Can they actually start earning those huge salaries by doing what they are supposed to do? Lets demand a cleaner city as the citizens. We don't always have to wait for someone else. Remember "be the change that you want to see"

To any organisations receiving this, please encourage your workers to wear green on Wednesday 26th August. We need to show that we care for the environment and we demand that The City Council Cleans up its act. So wear green on that day. Spread the word. Be green. Change your environment. No more dumping. No more dirt. It can happen.

Wednesday 26th August all citizens must wear green. Lets make a statement. We want a cleaner, greener city.

Cremation in Harare

Note from Mike G - I was talking to Mike Manson, (0912- 685-601) the Managing Director of Nuffield Funeral home, a few days ago about the lack of a decent Crematorium in Harare. Bulawayo citizens had a similar problem a few years ago and they mobilised the whole community to do something about it - the end result was that a new crematorium was opened in Bulawayo a few months ago.

I believe that we have a larger group of people with the right kind of contacts up here in Harare to do something about it. It would appear that the current ones need lots of attention and it may be better to start from scratch. So who's going to put up their hands to make it happen?? Remember that saying by one of the golfing greats 'If it is to be it is up to me',. At the end of the day we all die eventually and our cemeteries do not seem like the place most of us want to end up in!! If you want a cremation you have to go to Mutare when they have gas!!
/////////////////
From: Angeline NUFFIELD FUNERAL HOME19 Kay Gardens Kensington, Harare
In view of volume of cremations being done through the Hindu type in Mutare (one per day). We believe it is imperative that the gas operated units (2of) at Warren Hills need to be completely effectively and efficiently refurbished, as a matter of urgency.
The 2 units at Warren Hills crematorium are capable of cremating 4 per day depending on the time taken for each cremation service.
We feel with assistance from the committee we should be able to rectify the current situation within the near future.

WILFRED GEOFFREY CURRIE

WILFRED GEOFFREY CURRIE

Please would you notify family and friends of my Dad's death on Sunday 9th August, 2009.

Having moved to New Zealand to live with his youngest daughter and family, Jo & Bix Howat, in January, spending Christmas with middle daughter and family, Helen & Phil Morgan en route, enabling him to be catch up with the scattered family doings. Youngest son, Malcolm Currie in Suffolk, England was able to spend time with him writing his memoirs a few years ago.

Wilfrid Geoffrey, Geoff, Currie played a part in the building of Kariba, seconded from The 8th Army , he was the Surveyor working for the Civil Engineers who had the contract to do the initial survey of the dam basin.

He started his irrigation company Irri"8" at the age of 60 putting in many schemes for tea and coffee in Eastern Districts. God bless Dad and 'sleep tight'. Seddon and Frances, Helen, Phil & Tashi, Jo, Bix, Dougal & Didi, Malcolm, Nicky, Alex, Anthony & Ludmilla plus grandson Micheal.

This was received today and rather sums up the situation...

I'm sending you this essay my daughter wrote for an exam piece.

We wish to remain anonymous for personal reasons.

It is very emotive but it speaks for those children, who found themselves in similar circumstances, but their voices were never heard.

I hope it brings comfort to some and lets them know that their emotions and circumstances can never be minimilised.

The Call of the Wild

I had always been a farm girl. I had lived, breathed, eaten everything that nature provided.

I lived to be free.

I was ten years old at the time, naive, young and only wanting to play.
But although I did not understand what was happening to the extremes.

I still knew.

I knew the day my dad came home with slashes on his face and a swollen eye. I knew the day they surrounded my home and chanted the war cries of money and greed.

I knew.

Although I may have been naive, I knew my life would slowly crumble.

The things I didn't know were why?

These people, trying to burn down our house, were the people who helped raise me. The people who held me whilst my dad was out farming and my mother was working. They helped me become who I was. But now looking on it six years later, I understand.

I can't justify what they did, but I can understand.

They were poor, with children and so they did whatever they had to do to save their families.

Just as my dad was doing for us.

So as the economy of Zimbabwe began to deteriorate by the day. My mother dragged her way into my bedroom. And with a sunken face, protruding cheeks bones and no glint of hope in her eyes, she said "Se, we're leaving."

Reality stepped in as I screamed, "No mummy, we can't! This is my home."

"No this isn't home any more. We don't have anything left."

As the words came pouring out, so did the tears. My mother was my rock, my strength and support, and now that support was crashing down.

The next day, I sat in the boot of our Mercedes Station Wagon, with my only friend. My dog Millie. I said goodbye to the life I once knew. To the place I took my first steps, said my first words, felt my first emotion. I said goodbye to my tree I knew so well, to the dam where I learnt to swim, to the fields where I used to run free. I said goodbye to my world.

Two years later, Millie died.

At that moment, I felt worse than I had when I drove out the gate of my farm.

Letting go of Millie was letting my life go.

Letting go of the final pieces of home.

So I ran, to a park, anything that could come close to the feeling of space. And as I watched the pumping city of Cape Town spin around me, I climbed into a new tree, and tried to fight the call of the wild.

Because from that moment, I knew it would never be fulfilled.

What is MS? Multiple Sclerosis,

I have and have had friends with this dreadful condition - thse people are doing a good job!

or MS, is a debilitating disease of the central nervous system. There is no known cure. International research to discover both the cause and the cure for MS is ongoing. Very expensive treatments do exist which slow down the progression of MS and alleviate some symptoms.Symptoms vary in intensity and from person to person. They include blurred vision, weak limbs, muscle spasms, tingling or numbness, unsteadiness, incontinence, and fatigue. These symptoms occur as a result of scarring of the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibres in the central nervous system. The scarring creates a “short-circuiting” of nerve impulses travelling between the brain and other parts of the body. This in turn creates difficulty in movement and mobility for People with MS (PwMS),and can lead to partial or complete paralysis. The chief aim of MS Society of Zimbabwe is to help People with MS and assist with their individual needs. Your support of the MS Society is important in helping us achieve that goal.If you have been recently diagnosed by your neurologist and would like to know what the MS Society can do for you, or would simply like more information, please contact the MS Day Care Centre or any of the MS Committee members. Borreholes drying up

It appears that the boreholes in Hatcliff suburb, where our maid and gardener live, are drying up! This will be a very serious situation as the facilities for bathing etc will be Nil. we have just about emerged from the cholera outbreak and this could start again!

People are selling water from their bole holes which could lead to a serious situation as many boreholes will be depleted by those who are profiteering from this situation.
How can it be stopped????

We use water sparingly - have had no Municipal water now for two years but we ensure we do not water the verges outside our property or the grass inside - the plants that need water get it twice a week and we water the vegetable garden but little else. We share a bath - wash our clothes using a washing machine once a week - why do so many people waste one of our very precious resources?

So Close, Yet So Far - Eddie Cross

I bumped into Max Chigweda last week and in the course of our discussion he said to me, "At least we are closer to the end than the start". That just about sums up where we are right now and the territory in front of us is as deadly as any we have traversed so far. As has been the case so often in the past 30 years, we are dependent in part on what the region does or does not do to ensure we can cover the ground that remains.

I am quite encouraged by the news from South Africa where the Prime Minister saw the President on Monday. It seems clear to us that the South African leadership understands the situation we are in right now, both the President and the Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs are savvy, street wise and certainly more committed to a democratic outcome than was Thabo Mbeki. But the ghosts of the Mbeki administration remain and those in the region who want to try and protect Zanu PF from its fate are still embedded in the system and active.

The visit to South Africa and the discussions held with the President are in the same league as the September 1976 visit to Pretoria by Henry Kissinger when the Americans delivered the final blow that led to the demise of the Rhodesian Front and the eventual transfer of power to Mugabe in 1980. Because of the nature of diplomacy it will be some time before we see the final outcome of all this diplomatic manoeuvring.

If we look back over the past six months since MDC entered the transitional government, we can point to a number of key achievements
- we have stabilised the economy, secured a resumption of all basic services - health, education, water, sanitation and communications.
We have been able to restore markets and get the retail and wholesale sector back into business.

The finances of central government are recovering steadily - total revenues to the State have grown from $4 million in January to $70 million in July. My guess is that the theft and plunder of public assets has been reduced from perhaps $1,5 billion last year to $250 million.
That is partly because we have closed down the Reserve Bank and partly because there is not much left to steal.

We have been able to partly restore our relations with the international community - the World Bank and the IMF are both back in Zimbabwe with limited programmes of technical assistance and the Bank is making its first forays into local finance since 1997. We have made formal contact with virtually all the OECD States as well as the Non Aligned countries; international grant aid has reached $100 million a month and lines of credit negotiated, although we have yet to see the colour of this money.

On the downside we have seen little progress in media reform. No changes in the attitude or the activities of the security agencies and no changes to repressive legislation or improvements in the management system for elections. The constitutional reform process has started, but faces a difficult and tortuous path over the mountains in its way. The judicial system as a whole is being used as an instrument of oppression and a political weapon. No progress has been made in agriculture where output and activity continues to decline.

Yesterday the South African Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs said that she wanted to see "the acceleration of the implementation of the Global Political Agreement". In fact I think she said the "full implementation" and that would be even better. More we could not ask for, as the GPA, even though it has numerous weaknesses and faults, is the only way forward.

I attended the annual Congress of the Commercial Farmers Union this week in Harare. It was a courageous and well organised affair and Deon Theron was elected President. I was glad to see both - it is vital that while we work on the solution to our problems and negotiate the difficult terrain ahead of us that we keep what is left of our economic institutions alive and operational. Deon will make a good President and is an important player in this situation.

The keynote address was given by a farmer from Zambia who is the current President of the International Association of Agricultural Unions. It was an excellent summary of the global state of agriculture and it was good to see a farmer from Africa in such an influential position.
Zimbabwe's displaced farmers are making a huge impact on agriculture throughout the continent and are a real testimony to what we have lost in the way of human capital.

C G Tracey died the other day and his book "All for nothing?"
was on sale at the CFU Congress. It is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in this country and wants to see what has gone on over the past century - no man played a bigger role in building the country and served its best interests more than "CG", as he was known. The title was suggested by his wife before she died and all he did was to add the question mark to emphasise that it is not yet all over.

I hear rumbles that JZ may visit Zimbabwe for talks with Mugabe shortly.
The Vice President of SA is here for the funeral of our Vice President who died last week and he will be buried on Monday and no doubt talks will take place on the sidelines - funerals are great events for this sort of activity. Certainly we will have to wait for a couple of weeks to ascertain what is going to happen on this front.

If (as usual) we are let down by the region, we will have to fight our way through some very tough terrain. There is no doubt in my mind where the people are and if we can mobilise the resources required, we could stun Zanu PF yet again with a significant electoral victory in the bi elections. I was listening yesterday to some music especially written for the MDC and one song in particular asked "if you vote for Zanu, where are you going?" That just about sums things up.

This is not the time to relax or to abandon the prayer mat - we need to work and pray. At its heart this is a spiritual battle and both activities are vital to our eventual victory.

Eddie Cross

Police Watch as Witch Hunters Wreak Havoc

I have for many years said that Zimbabwe is a relatively unsophisticated society where witch craft, superstition and the paranormal are normal day to day occurrences - this is another example!

Saturday, 08 August 2009 16:35
POLICE can not stop witch-hunters known as Tsikamutanda from conducting controversial cleansing ceremonies in rural communities.

Police spokesperson superintendent Andrew Phiri said police would only intervene if there were complaints.

However, these complaints usually come after the Tsikamutanda have held ceremonies which more often than not, leave rural communities deeply divided and villagers deprived of their cattle, goats and sheep.

“We cannot act when there is no formal complainant from the villagers, our hands are tied,” said Phiri.
“However, we urge those who don’t feel comfortable with these witch-hunters to report to the police,” he said.

As the police spokesperson made the comments, there was mounting evidence that the self-styled prophets were not just freely conducting witch-hunting ceremonies with impunity, but were also indulging in criminal activities in broad daylight.

At Murehwa magistrates’ court last month, Thomas Mutasa (25), a well known Tsikamutanda who was operating from Chikwaka in Goromonzi, was charged with rape, allegedly committed while he was “casting away evil spirits”.

Prosecutors said the self-styled prophet told a 19 year old woman that she was possessed with evil spirits before he allegedly raped her.

After committing the crime, Mutasa allegedly rubbed his victim’s private parts with a concoction of water, salt and charcoal to “cleanse” her.

Mutasa denied the charges when he appeared before a Murewa magistrate.

But his case tallied with the modus operandi of tsikamutandas who are wreaking havoc in many rural communities.

The court heard that Mutasa who was performing his cleansing ceremony at Zavere Village in Chikwaka in May camped at the victim’s homestead.

In another case before the same court, Mutasa and another self styled traditional healer, Tendai Mudimu are facing two charges of extortion.

The duo allegedly forced a 72-year-old woman to surrender a blanket and a shirt, which belonged to her husband during a cleansing ceremony.

They told Evelyn Chitimbe to go and collect a blanket and her husband’s clothes. When she brought the clothes, Chitembe was ordered to shout in front of the crowd saying: “Kana uri chikwambo ibva pano,” (if you are a goblin go away)

The elderly woman then made a report to the police leading to Mutasa and Mudimu’s arrest.
As the saga unravels in the courts, more tsikamutandas are roaming freely and causing terror in the province.

Headmen and the villagers, who usually get rewarded by the self styled prophets, continue to invite them for witch-hunts.

Besides causing physical and mental suffering to villagers they accuse of bewitching others, the tsikamutandas are profiteering by cheating villagers in their so-called exorcising ceremonies. The villagers have to part with a small fortune for any exorcism undertaken at their homestead.

Most families who usually do not have cash are forced to give away their livestock.

When a village invites these witch hunters, it also has to pay for their upkeep. Besides extorting cash and livestock from the various villagers, the Tsikamutandas leave families divided after naming alleged witches.

“There is no peace in this area since a lot of people especially family members are now accusing each other of witchcraft,” said Munyaradzi Chisvo of Chikwaka village.

“In some cases children end up beating their parents.”

At one homestead a witch hunter known as Sekuru Guranyanga allegedly threatened a man he accused of keeping goblins at his homestead, after the man refused to part with his cattle.

“One morning we saw a goblin wearing tennis shoes.” said one family member. “It was a very short girl, we were so afraid that we had to comply with whatever Sekuru Guranyanga told us to do.”

They were ordered to part with two cows.

Although it not could not be established if Sekuru Guranyanga carried out genuine witch hunting sessions, some villagers are happy that he is in the area.

“Many people were dying in my family, after Sekuru Guranyanga came he removed a tokoloshe which he said belonged to my father,” said Duncan Mago.

“I am not working and this was caused by my father. After this cleansing I hope I am going to find a job very soon.”

The Traditional Medicines Practitioners’ Council is on record urging villagers to ask for registration licences from both faith and traditional healers to avoid being conned.

The council said most of the tsikamutandas were bogus.

FRAUDSTER

Please be warned there is a FRAUDSTER by the name William Mkweche masquerading as a worker from The Sofa Man (Pvt) Ltd, he actually has a fake Sofa Man work suit. I was also told by the Owner of Brooks Fabrics that he has been using our company name when he comes with people to buy material. Please be advised we fired William last month (13 July 2009) for stealing jobs. Also note the following points:
We at "The Sofa Man" do not conduct jobs at client homes for the sake of quality control. We work at our workshop in Hillside where we monitor the activities of the staff.
For the safety of your property and assets do not allow strangers to come work at your home where they get a chance to analyse your security and home set-up. I am not saying William will steal from you but it is a safety precaution you may have to consider.
In the event that you do hire the services of William, please note that we at "The Sofa Man" will not be liable for any losses incurred. He is prone to overcharging when it comes to the costs of material and then cutting on the material he uses hence the end procut is a sub-standard job. Please be warned accordingly and warn any friends who have hired his services. Kind Regards Cephas E. UPDATE ON KARORI FARM - CHARLES LOCK

The violations on Karori Farm continue unabated as police refuse to act.

Armed soldiers of the ZNA have still prevented the delivery of any crops from the farm. There is 150 tons of tobacco and 500 tons of maize waiting to be delivered but Mujaji insists that nothing will leave unless Lock agrees to giving him the farm. He has also shut down all operations for the umpteenth time to try and force us to comply. He has already stolen our irrigation pipes and pumps which we cannot access or use and has used the soldiers to prevent any equipment from leaving the farm.
The tobacco season is nearly over and still tobacco has not been delivered for sale nor the maize in a country where maize is desperately short. The Unity Govt seems powerless to act on this lawlessness as the army through sheer force are doing what they want for self enrichment.
What was once a highly productive farm seems will now become another worthless dust bowl.

Serial killer loose in Gweru

Just to let you know that there is definitely a serial killer loose in Gweru, and he seems to have it in for anyone connected to CFU officials.

So far: Bob Vaughn-Evans, CFU Regional Executive, killed with an axe in the night

Then Ray van Rensburg, killed with an axe in the night

Now Bill Colleyne attacked in the night with a brick..luckily he has survived.

All connected to CFU former Regional Chairmen. Possibly this is a mere coincidence. Who knows? When I catch him I get ten thousand dollars.

Yesterday a lady was held up at gunpoint in the private yard of a Doctor's surgery...amongst several other vehicles parked there, and her handbag stolen. All very quietly done..and the car drove off. Just be on your guard.

More robbery reports - the following report From kingdom Finance

NO PLACE IS SAFE THESE DAYS
Once again, may I take this opportunity, to advise you of another very traumatizing type of robbery that was experience by a spouse of one of our staff members stationed on the 12th floor Karigamombe Centre, Harare. A report of an armed robbery which occurred on Friday 17 July 2009 round about 1700 hours at Karigamombe Centre, Harare was received from James Nyatsine, the Premises Manager. The complainant (victim) is Everson Dube's wife. The lady got into one of the lifts from the ground floor intending to join her husband on the 12th floor. It just happened that at the time, there was no one else getting into the building as most of the building occupants were going off duty; hence she got in alone. The lift stopped on the 8th floor, formerly occupied by Renaissance Bank. Currently, the floor is vacant. As the lift opened, she saw a lone man who pointed a firearm (pistol) at her and was dragged out. She was force marched into one of the vacant offices near the staircase. The man grabbed the complainant's hand bag , searched and took a ZTE cell phone, cash amounting to US$8.00 and ordered her to remove her silver necklace and 3 bangles. The robber took possession of all the items. Complainant was assaulted for not carrying reasonable cash with her and was later locked in a vault on the same floor. To make her escape from the vault, she managed to climb up to the ceiling after breaking the ceiling boards (thank God it was not a concrete deck), which gave in to her weight and she fell on the floor in the passage. She then went up to the 12th floor where she met Mr. Nyatsine and Everson. A report was made to the Police who attended the scene and recovered her empty hand bag and shoes which dropped in the vault. Z.R.P. Harare Central I.R. number 071043/09 refers. A meeting held this morning with officials from CB Richard Ellis the Property Managers revealed that numerous thefts of water tapes, door closers, window latches and various other items are being stolen from three floors which are currently vacant; which means criminals are frequenting these floors if not sleeping there. As a result of this incident, they are suggesting to re programme the lifts so that they don't have to stop at all levels which presently are not occupied. May we also advise that at no costs should a staff member remain behind on his / her own. A company of at least three people after hours is a reasonable precautionary measure (NOT ONLY IN HARARE BUT EVERYWHERE WITHIN KINGDOM) In confidence, this office is appealing for any information which may lead to the arrest of the culprit. A similar incident occurred yesterday Monday 27/07/2009 in one of Old Mutual Buildings, Century Towers, at around 17:10hours. A lady employee of ZESA was in one of the lifts on her way out. The lift stopped on the 7th floor currently vacant. As the lift opened she saw a man standing outside. The man pointed a gun at her and ordered her to get out of the lift. It is said she remained in the lift despite the man's orders and the man held the lift open insisting that she comes out. The guards at the reception desk noted that the lift had remained stationery at floor 7 for longer than usual and one of them Guardians Guard Muringai went up to investigate. As the lift carrying the guard opened at this floor the man shifted the gun focus and pointed at the guard. This gave the lady the opportunity to escape in the same lift she had been caught up. The gunman panicked and bolted. When I visited Century Towers today for a first hand account of events both the lady and the guard were not there. They did not turn up for duty probably to nurse up shock effects. I will give you a fuller update in due course. It is possible we may have such incidents coming up more frequently in the next few days/weeks. The recommendations in the mail below should be considered. Most importantly is the reprogramming of the lifts in all buildings so that they do not stop at all vacant floors. All caretakers need to be warned to be extra vigilant. I will take up the alerting of Security Guards in buildings in the CBD and will liaise with ZRP officers to establish any plans that they may have in dealing with these robbers. It may be helpful to do a write-up to warn staff. JORDAAN LOUIS HENDRIK

MY PRECIOUS DAD 22 YEARS.

THE SEASONS COME AND GO, AND LIFE CHANGES ALL THE TIME, BUT MY LOVE FOR YOU IS STEADFAST. YOU WILL FOREVER LIVE IN MY HEART.

I MISS YOU DAD.

YOUR DAUGHTER

VAL

This is how it is!!!!

Received from a correspondent!
I am writing to thank you for bouncing my check with which I endeavoured to pay my plumber last month.

By my calculations, three nanoseconds must have elapsed between his presenting the check and the arrival in my account of the funds needed to honour it.

I refer, of course, to the automatic monthly deposit of my entire pension, an arrangement which, I admit, has been in place for only eight years. You are to be commended for seizing that brief window of opportunity, and also for debiting my account $30 by way of penalty for the inconvenience caused to your bank. My thankfulness springs from the manner in which this incident has caused me to rethink my errant financial ways.

I noticed that whereas I personally answer your telephone calls and letters, --- when I try to contact you, I am confronted by the impersonal, overcharging, pre-recorded, faceless entity which your bank has become.

From now on, I, like you, choose only to deal with a flesh -and-blood person. My mortgage and loan repayments will therefore and hereafter no longer be automatic, but will arrive at your bank, by check, addressed personally and confidentially to an employee at your bank whom you must nominate.

Be aware that it is an offense under the Postal Act for any other person to open such an envelope. Please find attached an Application Contact which I require your chosen employee to complete. I am sorry it runs to eight pages, but in order that I know as much about him or her as your bank knows about me, there is no alternative. Please note that all copies of his or her medical history must be countersigned by a Notary Public, and the mandatory details of his/her financial situation (income, debts, assets and liabilities) must be accompanied by documented proof. In due course, at MY convenience, I will issue your employee with a PIN number which he/she must quote in dealings with me.

I regret that it cannot be shorter than 28 digits but, again, I have modelled it on the number of button presses required of me to access my account balance on your phone bank service. As they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Let me level the playing field even further.

When you call me, press buttons as follows:

IMMEDIATELY AFTER DIALING, PRESS THE STAR (*) BUTTON FOR ENGLISH
