Bruce Freel
(40 yrs) dived into the Zambezi River in September 2010 and hit his head on a
rock and damaged his spine - C6 and C7. Unfortunately, he did not have
any medical cover at the time. The Victoria Falls community managed to
get him air-lifted the next morning to Mater
Dei in Bulawayo. His care at Mater Dei was not adequate for someone
suffering a spinal injury and he developed bed sores which became very
infected. He was then transferred to Parirenyatwa for further treatment.
However, it has been a long uphill battle with the many complications
which arise from spinal injury and paralysis. He has faced so many
challenges - bed sores, muscle atrophy, kidney infections and septecemia from
bed sores. He has not made much progress due to the lack of spinal
injury rehab here in Zimbabwe and is cared for by his mother and sister at his parents home.
We have
very kindly been offered assistance by a mission hospital, north of Harare,
which has come at a vital time as his condition is deteriorating rapidly.
Please could
any well-wishers who would like to donate towards his journey to this hospital
and for his stay and treatment he will require whilst there. Any
donations would assist this family which has been under great financial strain
for the past few years - medical costs have been high and incessant.
Please
contact Michelle Berens - 861431 or 0772311740 for further information.
Many thanks.
