THE EDITOR’S
DESK - Michael and Pat Gill
Christmas
is upon us and we wish all our members a Happy Festive Season and may all your
dreams come true in 2013. Drive safely.
Another busy year has flown by, or am I getting old? We have managed 11 Newsletters and we hope
they have kept you up to date with the Club activities.
As
you see this is number 97 and we trust we will hit the 100 about April 2013 if
the world did not come to an end on the 21st Dec. (My birthday –
MG).
Your
Committee has been active and we hope some new names will be involved when we have
the AGM in March. This is always a good
social day out at Donnybrook so calendar it now. See the 2013 diary. It is good to see we are having six events at
our club site at Donnybrook next year, hopefully we will have our own borehole
in place by then and we SHOULD get that lovely stuff – water!
SUBSCRIPTIONS:
It
is that time of the year again when I will be hounding you for your subs. They will remain at $40 per annum but we have
reduced the joining fee to $10. The club
year runs from January to December, so be ready with your cash when you see
me.
A
renewal notice is attached at the end of this newsletter. Please fill it in and note any changes of
status, address or phone numbers.

PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE FOR 2013
My
pet annual push to get your Personal Accident Insurance cover before we start
on competitions next year. We no longer need Competition Licenses for 4x4
events. However you do need the PA
Insurance. Get it for the year and save
all that hassle of filling in forms at every event and save yourself some money. See the correspondence below from Rose
Rushforth, Competitions Manager,
ZMSF. I have the forms and can e-mail
them to you. Pat gill@zol.co.zw
""The Personal Accident
form may be used for either an annual PA insurance @ $20 or a Temporary (Day)
Insurance @ $10 per event. All are on
the same form to make it easier.
We issue a card for Annual PA
Insurance. No card for the Day insurance

at Donnybrook on Sunday playing with his Jeep.
Welcome to the club, I know we will see a lot more of you now you have

MEMBER'S
NEWS:
This
is more like EX members' news. Two past
members have paid us a visit and it was good to catch up with Frank and Raine URQUHART
as well as Boris and Danielle KOSTRENCIC.
Both families left here more than ten years ago. The Urquhart's to South Africa and now England
and the KOSTRENCIC's to New Zealand.
Welcome back and enjoy your holiday.
TECHNICAL
TIP
We
all have a few old chargers for electrical appliances like torches, etc., and while scratching through these, the other
day, I see that some were written 220v in – 12 (or13.5 V) out. They are what you would use as a trickle
charger. I cut the special plug off, put
two small clamps on, tested to find which was positive and clipped it to my
Land Rover battery. High Presto a new
battery charger. Mark the + with red.
PAST
EVENTS:
Dungbeetle
Challenge – Mutare Nov. 17/18th
We
arrived early on Friday and selected a thatched gazebo near the Smallbridge Dam
for our camp with the Benzons. Sadly the
dam was about 3 m low but the scenery was stunning. BJ and his party were close
behind and then the crowd arrived. 19 entries and Mike Maas started to worry
about how they would cope. They did and
the trials started in good time on Saturday morning. With the low lake water is was inevitable that
we would use the dry lake shore, fine till a car sank to the chassis. No problem, drag it out and change the track!
The
tests made good use of the steep hills and small rocks and tree stumps which
held some people up for a while. Nobody
fell over and only a couple of breakages meant some dirty hands for a while.
A
quick rain storm wet us for about 30 minutes, then the sun came out and the
next 24 hrs the sky was clear. Lucky
because for entertainment there was an "Along the Lake Shore Mud
Run". The first few cars took the
driest looking part and sank. Even the
4WD Tractor had a problem pulling them out.
Somehow Lisbeth Kirk got pass the best only to have Pani Dobropoulos fly
past and head into the trees at the end.
Prize
Giving was the usual noisy affair and after the Mutare Boys winning our Bush
Pig they got well beaten by the Kirk family and Adrian Watt. This meant 5 Cournils at the top. Note that some of the drivers were Kirk
family members out from Denmark on holiday.
Mark
drove my "Alley Cat" V8 Lightweight; we had a lot of fun, except with
the tight corners which caused us to rack up a score the Zimbabwe Cricket team
would have enjoyed.
HUNTIN, SHOOTIN, FISHIN SOCIAL – XMAS
RUN.
After
a cryptic instruction and question sheet took you round parts of Harare that
you never see we had to try our hand at Golf.
This was even worse than the last time I played when on honeymoon. I got the prize for the shortest drive.
Fishing
was out of a boat on a trailer with a magnet on the line, Shooting was with an
air rifle that missed more beer tins than it hit and Huntin was naming pictures
of birds and animals hidden in the garden.
The Attwell's provided a fantastic roast pig and we explored Malcolm's
junk yard with "Future Projects" under the trees. A great day, won by the Thorburn family. Lots of goodies for the SOAP and $475 cash
too. Well done and S.O.A.P. (Save our
Old Age Pensioners) were extremely happy with the results of our fun day.
S.O.A.P.
APPEAL
We
have, however, had a further appeal from Kathy McIntosh of SOAP for
assistance. They are looking after
hundreds of pensioners who are in dire straits and have asked for old clothes
especially men's clothing and shoes, in particular. Some of the men at Braeside OAP Home are
walking barefoot. These can be dropped
off with us or give a ring and we will arrange collection. It would be nice if these poor people can at
least have a pair of shoes for Christmas.
