Veterinarians
for Animal Welfare (VAWZ) Inspectors last week managed to apprehend the
notorious puppy vendor, Rickson Madanhire. Reacting to a report from a member
of the public, Senior Inspector Taka and Vet Nurse Ncube were able to
handcuff Madanhire behind O.K. Mart in Braeside. The two puppies in his
possession, both wild terrible wounds on their heads from ‘fly-strike’
were immediately taken to a veterinary surgery for examination and treatment.
Madanhire was taken to Braeside Police Station where he was kept for the
mandatory 48 hours. Since Madanhire is a repeat offender, thorough
investigations carried out with assistance from Z.R.P. Borrowdale, Marlborough,
Avondale, Mbare, Rhodesville, Southerton, and Highlands revealed that previous
fines ($90,00) and two terms of community service (210 hrs and 105 hrs) had not
been completed – there was also a warrant of arrest issued from Mbare Police
Station along with a suspended six month jail sentence from a previous court
appearance. In addition to charges of contravening The Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Act, Madanhire also had charges of assault leveled against him. With
all this information at hand, VAWZ Inspectors held a meeting with the Public
Prosecutor explaining the seriousness of the crime and requesting that
Madanhire finally be made to pay for his cruel actions. At the court hearing,
the Judge sentenced Madanhire to six months in jail. VAWZ applauds his
decision and acknowledges and appreciates the assistance received
from the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Public Prosecutor and members of the
public. Puppy vendors can be reported to VAWZ on cell nos.: 0778431528 /
0773476009 /0775722449 or landline 253185 -7.
