Rob was a gunner with the Helicopter Squad and flew many sorties with success. He was fearless and received a citation for bravery in the bush war in Zimbabwe. He is remembered in the book “The Wings of War” by Peter Petter-Bower and he under mentioned Citation appears in the Contact Book, Rhodesia At War by John Lovett.
SERGEANT R.C. WHYTE - AIR FORCE
On 13h August, 1967, Sergeant Whyte was the crew member on the helicopter which went to the assistance of Rhodesian ground forces pinned down, at a range of 30 yards, by a group of terrorists in a strong defensive position. Whilst under enemy fire, he directed attacks on to the terrorist position. His determination, under conditions of great personal danger, undoubtedly helped to keep Rhodesian casualties at a low lever.
After the war Rob joined Afritair and worked there for a number of years before starting his own Take Away and made a huge success of this. He then started Ma Baker Bakery and produced the rolls for all Nandos outlets in Harare, once again he made a great success of this project distributing his bread and rolls around Zimbabwe. Rob also devoted his life to his family and animals. He was an avid contributor to Friends Animal Foundation.
A very keen fisherman, was a member of the Bass Masters but most of all he loved the Zambezi River, spending every spare moment at Mana Pools or on the Zambezi River. His ashes will be sent down the Zambezi at a later date when his family from the UK and Australia can all meet to say “cheers Rob.”
