THE EDITOR’S
DESK - Michael and Pat Gill
We wish you a happy and active motoring New Year may
2014 be a good year.
We
hope our efforts at keeping you informed have been enjoyed, somehow we have
managed about one a month and it has been fun, hard work but fun.
Fortunately
we have a very active Club and we are financially strong. We try to put on a wide selection of events
and our addition of the letters, A B C, to show what type of event is planned
on the calendar, is a guide. It's a good
help to the newer members.
CHAIRMAN'S
CHATTER: - Peter
Benzon
Hello everyone, Christmas has come and gone and
hopefully it was a festive one with good food and lots of gifts. Now we welcome
2014 and hope it treats us well. We have got a lot going on this year but the
most exciting is our 20th 4x4 Jamboree and we are going back to our
old time slot of late May and preparations are underway to make the 20th
the best and biggest we have ever had.
We are also in the process of revamping our website and
big thanks have to go out to Bruce Grobler for his assistance in making this
work. The site will be online sometime this month so go and have a look at www.4x4.co.zw
There are a lot of new features that are being
incorporated in the new site. Now it’s time to teach an old dog new tricks and
get our committee to learn how to operate the new site and keep it constantly
updated. This should become a good tool in letting people know what our club
has been up to and hopefully drum up some new membership.
Have a Great year filled with mud dust and 4x4 fun,
Cheers Peter
SUBS:
It
is nearly the end of the year and I will be chasing you for your subs.
Subs remains at $40 for the year. We will be there with the Receipt Book and
new Membership cards at the Ngomokurira Family Day run. Have your money
ready!! See the
Membership Renewal Form at the end of this newsletter.
MEMBER'S
NEWS:
MacDONALD: Richard. It is with great sadness we advise you of the
sudden death of Richard. Richard was an
early member of the club; he joined in 1995 and had been involved in all manner
of club activities. He will be
remembered for his knowledgeable talks on spiders; for taking expeditions on
Pencil Line treks in the Zambezi Valley and for innovative camping adaptions to
his Land Rover. Some will remember the creation he made called "Was-a-Landie". Our
condolence and sympathy to Judy and sons, he will be sadly missed.
TRAILERS
Yes,
this does include the Comp Car you drag to away places. We have not yet found the legislation to
cover an A-frame towed Landy but Neil found the following for the trailer guys.
Besides
your vehicle and the trailer carrying your comp car requiring the yellow
diamond reflector tape, yes it exceeds 8 mtrs, the trailer should be classified
as heavy. Note the tow car must also
have the yellow tape, not just the trailer.
“Heavy” is a trailer with load
capacity exceeding 550kgs and must have all wheels fitted with brakes. A ‘heavy’ trailer requires a GVM/NVM sticker.
As the A-framed rig exceeds 8 mtrs I
suggest you put yellow tape on the Comp Car and tow car to save being hassled.
TECHNICAL
TIP
A
few tips for the long distance travelers, the trip through Botswana and Namibia
that you have planned.
Water:
We have found that small containers, 5 ltrs, are more easily moved, emptied, and
refilled than 20 or 30 ltr containers.
When one leaks the resulting flood is less of a disaster.
Take
a small roll of binding wire, a roll of Duct tape and Super Glue (preferably a
new tube). Even a burst radiator hose
can be taped up and wired over, then more tape. I have done it and it works.
But keep the pressure cap off!
PAST EVENTS
Many
thanks for the Newsletter and very belatedly, because the people digging
trenches for 'Liquid' have managed to destroy a cable, it's proving a headache for Tel One to replace
it - so not sure when you'll get this,
Just a huge thank you from us both
for a most enjoyable and memorable celebration of 20 years of the 4X4 Club. Like you, we were blown away by the
beautiful table decorations. The whole
evening was very enjoyable. Well done to everyone involved in the preparations.
Kind
regards, Sue and
Richard Arkell
